Alexander R. McLaughlin died peacefully on October 15, 2021. He was the son of the late Roy L. and Frances (Hayes) McLaughlin and was predeceased by his brother, John R. McLaughlin. He is survived by his partner of many years, Barbara M. Grey, his children Janet DeMaio (Robert) of Wallingford, CT, Michael McLaughlin (Alienne) of North Haven, CT, and grandchildren Jessica, Stephanie, and Brian, Mia, Matthew, Jason, Rachel, and great-granddaughter Evangeline.
Alexander was born in Meriden, CT in 1938. He attended local schools, graduating from Meriden High School in 1956. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, served in the U.S. and overseas, and was released from active duty in 1961.
After his release from military duty, he accepted a Laboratory Technician position with American Cyanamid, Wallingford, CT, where he spent 5 years before accepting a position with the Upjohn Company's Gilmore Research Laboratories, North Haven, CT. Shortly after joining Upjohn, he was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from the University of New Haven. At Upjohn, he was involved as a research chemist, product development and market development specialist. He remained with Upjohn until his division was acquired by Dow Chemical in 1986. He remained in North Haven until Dow closed the Laboratories and was transferred to Dow Corporate in Midland, MI.
Alexander retired after 25 years and returned to Connecticut, where he accepted a position with A. Schulman, Inc., Akron, OH, and where he remained for 9 years. A year or so later he began consulting with SynUthane International, which lasted several years until the company relocated to Florida.
During his career, Alexander was awarded numerous United States and foreign patents in various fields and authored several technical publications. His business travels took him throughout the United States, Canada, several European countries and mainland China. His hobbies included boating, fishing, scuba, cross country skiing, wood working, model railroading, and cooking.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 29, 2021 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM and will conclude with a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield.
