Anna White (Romanko), 93, of Duxbury, peacefully entered Eternal Rest on December 31, 2022. Anna (Ann) was a member of the Roman Catholic Holy Family Church, Duxbury.
Born in a tenement dwelling on Salem Street in the North End of Boston on May 13, 1929, she was the much-loved daughter of Peter and Tanka Romanko, formerly of Psary, Ukraine.
Anna lived her early formative years in the North End and West End, with its colorful street atmosphere. The tenements the family lived in lacked central heating and necessities that are now commonplace. The open space found along the Charles River, at the Boston Common, and Public Garden, were her playgrounds. Her young adulthood was spent at Mattapan, where the family purchased their first home (1940), and at Hyde Park – second home (1945). With her parents interested in getting their children off on the right foot the second home was a three family. The first two units were set aside for the parents and the oldest daughter. The third unit was to be the launching off place for each remaining daughter when they got married. Each got to live there until the next one was ready to tie the knot. Hopefully, in the meantime they had saved money for a down payment on a house when it came time to move.
Anna's working career in the business world was brief. She held clerical office jobs for ten years in Boston at Fireman's Fund Insurance in Post Office Square, and at Standard Accident Insurance on Atlantic Avenue. At one level, she would say, that those were the best years, when her city was alive with activities that she participated in. It was a relatively safe place for a young person. That is where she met her future husband. Boston was a "Navy town" at the time and John White who was raised in another state found himself there while stationed on a ship home-ported in South Boston. After that period, she settled down into the life of a married homemaker for her family for the next twenty-five years. A hardship came upon the family in 1972 with the birth of her second son, Christopher. He came into this world with a difficult case of Cerebral Palsy. Never wanting to place him in an institution she took care of him for seven long years, until his demise. Her Religion gave her strength. Before retirement she returned to the workforce for a short time.
Anna was the beloved wife of the late John White for whom she married in 1954. Mother of Daniel White of Duxbury, and the late Christopher White. She was the youngest (Romanko) sibling of Catherine Ciunyk, Teckla "Terry" Grimshaw, Marion Millman, and William Romanko, all deceased. Four sisters and one brother.
