Arline M. Smith of Marshfield, formerly of Westwood, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2019.
She was born December 11, 1923 in Wytopitlock, Maine to Charles S. and Vincie M. (Bunker) Hulbert. She grew up in Patten, Maine and attended Patten Academy. After graduating in 1942 she went on to the University of Maine at Orono where she met the love of her life, Robert D. Smith. He was in the ROTC at the University of Maine. Although Arline did not complete the traditional four years to get her Bachelor's degree, she did, however, obtain her "MRS." degree on May 20, 1944. She and Bob were married in Louisville, Kentucky while he was in the Army. Wedding vows of the 1940's traditionally included the "until death do us part" wording. That parting came on March 14, 2010 after almost 66 years of marriage; however, their reunion for eternity was November 1, 2019.
Subsequent degrees followed. She became "Mum" to daughter Pamela and son Stephen. Her love, joy, and focus in life were her family and her home. She was involved in Scouts with both her children. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, and dancing with her husband. Her next degree was that of "Grandmother" to six grandchildren, welcoming and rocking each and every one as if they were her one and only! She was very proud of the fact that all six of her grandchildren were college graduates! "Great- grandmother" to thirteen followed. As with each grandchild, she was thrilled every time a new little great-grandchild came into her arms for love.
Family gatherings were frequent and went beyond birthdays and holidays. Summer vacations at the camp on Bottle Lake included not only family but also extended family and friends. This tradition has been passed down from one generation to the next (currently four) since 1932. It will continue with her keeping an eye on of us all from above, right beside her husband. She was and always will be "the heart of her family". This sentiment is reflected on her stone.
She is survived by her two children: son Stephen Smith (Carolyn) of Marshfield, MA and daughter Pamela Davis (Chris Korben) of Parrottsville, TN. Six grandchildren: Kimberly (Smith) Hurley, Kerry (Smith) (Scott) Weiss of Marshfield, MA; Robert Davis (Barbra) of Central Square, NY; Beverly (Davis) Murphy of Norwood, MA; Stephen Davis (Tara) of Annapolis, MD; and Charles Davis (Tina) of Bridgewater. Thirteen great-grandchildren: Amanda (Hurley) Rees, Kayla, Patrick, and Ashley Hurley; Lauren Weiss; Eric and Nicole Davis; Jonathan, Jason, Ethan, and Alexandra Murphy; Taryn and Emmalie Davis.
There will be no visitation. Graveside service and interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, 1048 State Street, Bangor, Maine on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11:30 p.m.
