Obituary

Barbara Frances (Leahy) DeCastro, 95, of Marshfield, passed away peacefully, after a period of declining health, on October, 3, 2021, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Janice Louise (Hamlin) and Roy Albert Jamrog, where she had resided for the past eight years.

Born in Oakland, Maine on February 17, 1926, she was the daughter of the late James Edmond and Dorothy Louise (Glover) Leahy. Barbara enjoyed a long and rewarding career in real estate. After working for several South Shore realtors, she and her second husband, the late Alfred John DeCastro, formed DeWitt, Duncan and DeCastro real estate company. In addition to selling homes she also taught the Massachusetts Salesperson and Broker course where she further expanded her large circle of friends.

Barbara and Al took great pleasure entertaining, dancing, attending jazz fests and traveling throughout their time together. They accumulated many happy memories in their homes in Marshfield, Mass. and Belleair, Fla. After working into their seventies they moved permanently to Florida. After Al's death, Barbara continued to reside in Florida until health issues necessitated moving back to Marshfield. Those who knew Barbara well won't be surprised to learn that up until very recently she continued to maintain her blonde hairdo, perfectly manicured nails and her impeccable wardrobe. Her love of shoes, handbags and "sparkly" jewelry brought great joy and amusement to her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her son, Ralph "Buster" Gerald Hamlin, Jr. who was killed November 29, 1965 in Vietnam; brother Richard Wayne and his wife Jeanne (Sawyer) Leahy, brother Alan Evans Leahy; sister Joyce Elaine (Leahy) Gellerson and her husband Delwin Frank Smith; step-father Kenneth George DeWitt; step-sister Elizabeth "Betty" Lou (DeWitt) Emery; lifelong friends Edward "Bud" John and Josephine "Jo" (Thibeau) King.

In addition to her daughter and son-in-law she is survived by her grandchildren Shawn Paul Hamlin Buote and his partner Bethaney Carpenter, Clearwater, Fla.; Kristin Marie (Buote) Lillie, husband Matthew Eric and children Matthew Owen and Patrick Bradley Lillie, Whitman, Mass.; half-sister Deborah "Debi" Sue (DeWitt) Hambright, Largo, Fla.; niece Susan Ann Gellerson, Jamestown, N.C.; cousins Marc William Hambright, Warsaw, Ind. and Sarah Rachael Hambright, Clearwater, Fla.; step-brother James Alman DeWitt, wife Gwen Marie (Riggs), Ellsworth, Maine; step-sons Stephen Gerard DeCastro, Marshfield, Mass. and David Duncan DeCastro, Pembroke, Mass.; step-daughter Charlotte Louise DeCastro, Naples, Fla.; step-nephew Duncan Gibson Smith and wife Martha (Whiting), Cumberland, Maine; grand niece Lisa Sally (Hanscom) Campbell, Jamestown, N.C.; grand nephew; Brian Arnold Hanscom, Fuquay Varina, N.C.

Barbara was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend to so many. She will be deeply missed but will live on in the hearts and memories of family and friends. Burial in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Abington, Mass. and Celebration of Life will take place in the spring.
