Barry W. Fish of Marshfield passed away on November 1, 2020 after a long illness, at the age of 71. Beloved husband for 49 years of Judith M. (Slattery) Fish; cherished father of Brian Fish and his wife Amy of Douglas, MA, Michael Fish and his wife Michelle of Marshfield, and Alissa Phinney and her husband Matt of Marshfield; proud Papa of Nevan, Payton, Camden, and Brennan Fish and Jackson, Casey, and Brayden Phinney. Son of the late Harry and Thelma (Eddy) Fish and dear brother of D. Louise Kane of NH, Shirely Dugan of Falmouth, and the late Harry Fish of Falmouth, Barry also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Born in Quincy, Barry was raised in and attended schools in Braintree. After high school, he proudly served his country as a member of the Army 1st Air Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War, where he earned many medals and commendations, including the Purple Heart. He married Judi in 1971 and went on to have three children, Brian, Michael and Alissa, who they raised together in Marshfield. He enjoyed coaching their many youth sports and working on projects around the home. Barry was proud of his family and always looked forward to spending time during the holidays with his mother Thelma and sister Louise in Weymouth. Barry was a retired auto mechanic and had a life-long love of cars. It was well known among his friends and family that he could fix anything and definitely had the tool for the job. Before his illness, you could often find him under the hood of one of his children's cars, helping a friend with theirs, or coming to the rescue during a homeowner emergency whenever anyone needed him.
Becoming a grandfather to his seven grandchildren gave him purpose in his later life. His calm and patient demeanor, along with his strong devotion to family and his sense of humor, made him a perfect fit for the job. Nevan, Jackson, Payton, Casey, Brayden, Camden and Brennan always knew he would have their backs and provide encouragement as needed. He would also frequently have a good story to tell them about his days in the Army or perhaps drag racing with his friends. "Papa," as he was affectionately known, could always be found on the sidelines or in the audience of his grandchildrens' games and performances. When he wasn't, he could be found at home in his chair dressed in one of his favorite flannels watching the Celtics or looking for help with the latest technology.
His Grandchildren's fondest memories of him are of being picked up from school in his truck, jamming to the Beach Boys and taken to McDonalds for lunch followed by trips to the town dump and airport. Afternoons were spent playing old school Atari and watching old movies, car shows, and Walker Texas Ranger. He loved to show them car auctions and reminisce about the cars of his youth and the fun he had with them. It was these simple moments that he cherished the most.
Whether known as Barry, Dad or Papa, he will be missed immensely. However his spirit will live on through his loving family and his life will be honored through them.
Barry will be laid to rest in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne with full Military Funeral Honors. Memorial donations can be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Research Institute, 450 Brookline Ave, Boston MA 02215.
