Obituary

Bertram White O'Donnell, 90, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully on Friday, September 2, at home in Marshfield with his family by his side.

Bert was a lifelong resident of Marshfield. The son of Gerald W. O'Donnell and Dorothy Bosworth O'Donnell Bedell, he grew up on his uncle Luther Little's farm in Seaview and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1944. He served in the Navy during World War II. He met his future wife Shirley when she came to Marshfield to teach school, and they were married on April 12, 1952. In 1953, Bert and Shirley built their house on part of the old Little Farm and set about raising their three children: Bert Jr., Dorrie, and Carrie. Bert worked for Marshfield Sand & Gravel for 22 years as Foreman of the Concrete Form Division and later worked for South Shore Bank as their Property Manager, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and an active member of the community; he was a member of the Marshfield Yacht Club and was a charter member of the Marshfield Rotary in 1969.

Bert took great pride and pleasure in maintaining his home and gardens, as well as helping his children with many home and farm improvement projects during his retirement. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed many years skiing in North Conway, ice skating on the pond beside his house, boating on the North and South Rivers of Marshfield, and spending time on and off the water at the family's cottage in Bremen, Maine. Above all, he loved spending time with his family. In addition to being a tireless worker, he was a devoted grandfather who attended countless baseball games, football games, horse shows and dog shows to support his grandchildren Bud and Katie in their various interests. One of his most memorable projects was working with Bud to build a baseball diamond in the field next to his house and playing designated pitcher for neighborhood pick-up games. He adored children and animals, and they loved him in return. His unwavering kindness and quiet good humor will be remembered forever by all who loved him. He was a wonderful man.

Bert was the beloved husband of Shirley Bedell O'Donnell, married 64 years. Father of Bertram W. O'Donnell, Jr. and his wife Karen of Marshfield; Dorothy O'Donnell Verdy and her husband Michael of Medway; and the late Carolyn B. O'Donnell of West Bridgewater. Grandfather of Katharine N. O'Donnell of Marshfield and Bertram W. "Bud" O'Donnell III of Brant Rock. Brother of Franklin L. O'Donnell of Delta Junction, Alaska, and the late Edward B. O'Donnell of Marshfield. Brother-in-law of Richard Bedell of Bremen, Maine, Margery Spear of Wilmington, Bryant Bedell of Andover, and Iva Riley of Chico, California as well as the late LeRoy Bedell, Jr. and the late Vilma Merrill of Wilmington. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
