Celebrated Musician Brian M. Stratton Departed This Life Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at the age of 49.
What South Shore lost in Stratton's untimely death, the community can be comforted by the musical legacy he leaves behind. Music was an integral part of his family life since early childhood, and the young Brian stood out immediately as an accomplished performer. He had that "special something," and the ensuing years only heightened and intensified his talents and abilities.
A life-long New Englander who resided in Green Harbor, Brian was the second son of four children born to Julia B. Stratton, Marshfield, and Lawrence R. Stratton, Clearwater, FL. A proud father of four children: Joshua 25, Brentyn 22, Nathaniel, 18 and Emma,15. From an early age, Stratton was a powerful presence in the South Shore music scene. He lived to play and perform--a true musician's musician. Upon graduating from Marshfield High School, he attended Berklee School of Music, but the lure of the hot music scene called him quickly to the performance stage where he first fronted The Infractions.
Stratton not only loved living and performing at South Shore venues, he believed in giving back to the community that allowed him to exhibit his musical abilities. Scituate's Heritage Days was a big favorite of this versatile performer: two full days of non-stop music. Alas, he was just in the preliminary planning stages for the 2018 event when he succumbed to an untimely death.
Whether in studio putting final touches on an album or onstage surrounded by some of the biggest names in music, like Chicago, Hootie and the Blowfish, Jeffrey Gaines, Paula Cole to name just a few, Stratton was in his element--doing what he loved best in life--sharing his talent with dedicated fans.
Most recently, he had been totally immersed in planning a major benefit performance for ALS to be held at Station Eight in Marshfield on November 22. The event was first launched in January 2016 by the now-deceased Kevin Gosnell who had been afflicted with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. As a local businessman and father of three, Gosnell knew first-hand the devastating effect of this life-altering affliction. Stratton was visibly moved by this, and decided to raise funds by doing what he did best--producing a CD. It was an intense and challenging undertaking, but he persevered and the CD entitled "Pay It Forward" was produced. It included 15 songs--some original--performed by an outstanding group of musicians who had worked personally and professionally with him over the years. The CD, released in June '17, sells for $10 and the proceeds will benefit ALS.
However, in a sad twist of fate, now Brian Stratton is the subject of a GoFundMe page. Because of his untimely demise, he leaves behind four children, ages 15 to 25, along with other unanticipated expenses.
