Obituary

Caroline Foster Wyeth Todd of Northfield, VT and Duxbury, MA, passed away late on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the age of 87. She was lovingly cared for by hospice and wonderful nurses. Her family was at her bedside and she was at peace. Carol was the beloved wife of W. Russell Todd and dear mother of W. Thomas Todd and his wife Cynthia of Olympia. WA, Sarah Todd Gallagher and her husband Stephen of Fairfax, VA, Ellen Todd Drew and her husband John of Los Altos Hills, CA. Carol also leaves a sister, Ann Wyeth Dake of Connecticut, 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Carol was born on 24 May 1928 in Beverly, Massachusetts. She was named for her great grandmother, Caroline Foster. Her parents were William Henry Wyeth, Jr. of Essex, MA and Helen Foster Lee of Beverly, MA. She attended Beverly schools from kindergarten through High School, where she graduated in June 1946.

In High School, Carol was an excellent student and went on to graduate from Smith College in 1950 following in the footsteps of her mother, class of 1914, and her aunt, Barbara Lee, class of 1922. Also her younger sister, Ann M. Wyeth Dake graduated from Smith in 1951.

Carol did graduate work at Radcliff College. The program was a one year curriculum that followed the Harvard Business School model, developed by Harvard professor T. North Whitehead. She then took employment in Alexandria, VA at Melpar Inc. a division of Westinghouse Air Brake Corp. She was in the personnel department.

On June 19th, 1952 Carol married First Lieutenant William Russell Todd, her high school sweetheart, and for the next 30 years was active in Army life. In the first few years of marriage she volunteered at the Fort Knox Thrift shop and the post hospital, interrupted only by the birth of their first child, William Thomas Todd, named for his grandfather.

In 1955, while expecting their second child, Sarah Lee Todd, the young family moved to Heidelberg, Germany for a three year tour. Carol again became deeply involved in Army life and the welfare of the enlisted families.

In 1959, the family returned to Fort Knox where their third child, Ellen Wyeth Todd was born.

Over the years Carol volunteered and supported many community related organizations to include the Army Community Services, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, American Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society. She managed all of this while moving 29 times and raising a wonderful family.

In their final Army assignment, she was asked by the Commander in Chief, US Army Europe to help bring effective volunteer management practices to the Army Community Services Centers in Europe, which entailed visiting most of the major Army installations in Europe. For her work, she received the US Army Certificate of Appreciation for Patriotic Service.

The years 1982 to 1992 were at Norwich University where Carol founded the Norwich University Center for Volunteer Management, and founded and managed the nation's first Peace Corps Preparatory Program. She served three successive Governors of Vermont as their Chair of the Governor's Commission on Volunteers as well as Vermont's Commission on National Service. Carol chaired the Vermont delegation at President H.W. Bush's Governors conference on The Points of Light, in Washington DC. During this period she was recognized for her work as a member of the board of directors of the Vermont Historical Society, co –chair of the fund raising committee to expand the Northfield Public Library, and President of the Norwich University Friends of the Libraries. She was chairman of the Museum Associates of Norwich's Gordon Sullivan Museum. In 1993 Norwich University recognized her contributions by awarding her an honorary Doctorate in Public Administration.

In 1996 Carol was selected to carry the Olympic torch through a portion of Vermont.

Carol was a member of the Board of the Carol and Russ Todd Lecture Series, where she helped to bring world leaders to speak at Norwich University.

In 2001, the family moved their winter home to Duxbury, MA where Carol became involved with the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society. In 2008, they recognized her for her volunteerism, particularly her work with the Archives.
