Obituary

Ch arles R. Chaplin Sr. formerly of Marshfield MA passed away peacefully on Friday, July 9, 2021 at the age of 94. Son of the late Charles R. Chaplin and Rose (Coughlin) Chaplin. Beloved husband of Eleanor M. (Cummings) Chaplin of 72 years, loving father of Maureen Whittles and her husband Thomas of Sandwich, Charles R. Chaplin Jr of Fort Meyers FL, Edward Chaplin and his wife Treva of North Palm Beach FL, Deborah C. Hoban and her husband Michael of Marshfield and predeceased by daughter Charlene M. Chaplin and son Gerard R. Chaplin. Charles also leaves his brother Gerard Chaplin and his wife Arlene of Sherborn, predeceased by sisters Virginia (Ginger) Chaplin and Jean Curran. Cherished grandfather to Michelle and Marc Whittles, Charlene Dineen, Kristen and Michael Hoban, Bobby, Cory and Kali Chaplin, Mathew Chaplin, Madison and Chance Chaplin, and great- grandfather of Grace, Asa, Eleanor (Nora), Theo, Hannah, James and Conor.

Charles, a WW2 Navy veteran, was originally from Brighton MA, moving to Marshfield where he and Ellie brought up their 6 children. He had a tile and real estate business before serving the Marshfield Police Department from 1956 until his retirement as Chief of Police in 1984. He was one of the original three on the Marshfield Police Scuba team. After retirement, he and Ellie would spend summers in Marshfield and winters in Key West, Big Pine Key and Stuart FL.

He loved his time with friends who became family, his Dockside Donut and McDonalds morning coffee buddies, skiing, golfing and riding his scooter.

He was never one to sit still, so true retirement was not an option. He was a Ranger at Squirrel Run, bartender at the Bridgeway Inn and the Conch Flyer (Key West airport) before opening his own Sports Bar "Charlies Place" in Key West. He was a member of the Marshfield Kiwanis club and the Key West Lions club. Whether he was mowing neighbor's lawns, busing tables at Scooters or teaching a handicap child to swim, he was always willing to lend a hand.

Hardworking and always dedicated to family and friends, his priority was ensuring his Ellie would always be taken care of.

Memorial service will be held at a St Christine's Church September 18, 2021 at 10:00 am. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery Marshfield.
