Obituary

Charlotte F. Queeny died peacefully at her home in Duxbury MA on Monday, October 16, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.  She was 94 years old.

Born in Rockland, MA, Charlotte was the youngest child of Charles H. and Mary A. Fitzpatrick.  She grew up in Abington and spent her summers in Falmouth Heights.

Mrs. Queeny attended Villa Maria in Montreal, Canada until she entered Thayer Academy in her freshman year.  It was there that she met her future husband, James F. Queeny and from that point on, they were inseparable.  They were married on May 15, 1943 in Jacksonville, FL shortly before Mr. Queeny returned to service as Executive Officer of PT 508 during World War II.  Married for 72 years and together for 75 years, they were often asked what their secret was to a successful marriage.  They both agreed that having a great sense of humor and showing others kindness would solve many problems. Duxbury residents will recall seeing them on their daily walks across the Powder Point Bridge, hand-in-hand, right up until their early-90's.

After spending several years in Europe where Mr. Queeny attended Trinity College in Dublin, they settled in Duxbury in 1952.  It was there that Mrs. Queeny opened the Meeting House Nursery School where for more than 30 years, Duxbury children were taught the basic fundamentals of social graces and etiquette.  Former students recall the daily firm handshakes and looking their teacher in the eye as they arrived each morning.  They recall that she always fun, loving, and caring, and many of her students remained in touch with her right up until the time of her passing.

Mrs. Queeny was a visible and active member of the community. She was a member of the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society, the Ladies Lunch Bunch and an honorary member of the Duxbury Yacht Club.  Last year, at the Club's Annual Prize Day, she was recognized as the oldest living female member.  For many years Mrs. Queeny was a volunteer at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, now known as Beth Israel Deaconess-Plymouth. She served on their Board of Directors, and spent several years as the Club's President.

Mrs. Queeny will be remembered as a remarkable woman, filled with warmth, unstoppable energy, and an intuitive understanding of others.  She was a great storyteller, and her love of anything chocolate was legendary. She was cherished as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and good friend, beloved by so many, and who will be dearly missed.

Mrs. Queeny leaves her daughter Charlotte Vena and her husband Edward of Duxbury, her son James Queeny of Duxbury, daughter Elizabeth Queeny of Duxbury, daughter Suzanne Ragsdale and her husband Smith of Georgetown, SC, and daughter Caroline Queeny of Duxbury.  She was the loving grandmother of Elizabeth Vena of Boston, Edward Vena and his wife Jeanette Mundt of Brooklyn, NY, Hart Peary and her husband Scott of Needham, Warner Queeny and his wife, Edith of Bangalore, India, Caroline Queeny of Brooklyn, NY, Caroline Russo of Kittery, ME and her fiancé, Joseph Mitchell, Samuel Little and his wife, Carrie of Charleston, SC and Martin Little and his fiancé, Sarah Grace Dennis of Charleston, SC. She is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, Charlie Peary, Gigi Peary, and Ben Little, and her nephew, Dr. Charles Kennel of Los Angeles, CA.
