Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Christopher Brian Roth Sr.,  a beloved son, brother, father, and lifelong friend, who died on October 30, 2024, surrounded by family, at the age of 65. Chris was a master boat builder, an avid fisherman, and a true lover of the water.

Chris is survived by his two children, Christopher Roth, Jr., and Gretchen Roth, and by his siblings George Roth, Gregory Roth, and Karen Pendergast. He is preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Roth (Weisen), father, George G. Roth, and his brother, Kevin Roth.

Born in Brookline, Chris was raised in Marshfield, where he developed a profound connection to the town's natural beauty. His parents brought him and his siblings often to Rexham Beach, where he spent countless hours by the ocean. His passion for the water was infectious—whether he was casting a line in the North or South Rivers, working on his latest boat project, or simply enjoying the serenity of a quiet sunset on the water, Chris found peace and joy in the simple pleasures that life on the water provided.

Chris's love for boats was more than a hobby—it was his life's work, sparked in his teen years. Family friends will remember his first boats being built in the garage of his family home and sitting pretty in the backyard. Or they may remember launching into the rivers on a basic, hand-cobbled raft in their pre-teen years. Chris was not scared of the water or of life.

As a skilled boat builder, he was obsessed with artistry and design. Anyone who knew Chris, or whoever rode on his boats, knew that he never tired of hearing "Nice boat!" at launch. He was able to live his dream, and he enthusiastically mounted brass rails and varnished teak until he couldn't anymore.

Family and friends who had the privilege of spending time with Chris will remember him not just for his work ethic and skill, but for his warmth, generosity, and sense of humor. He was always eager to share a story, offer advice, or lend a hand to anyone in need. Whether on the shore, in a boat, or sitting around a campfire, Chris made everyone feel welcome, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of Chris's life will be held at St. Ann by the Sea in Marshfield on November 15 at 10:30 AM. A casual reception at the church will follow. Friends and family are encouraged to "come as you are," as Chris was never one to stand on ceremony and instead preferred to be ready to catch a dip in one of the many ponds of Myles Standish with Chopper, his best canine pal, or to hop on a boat and catch a fish.

Chris's legacy will live on in the boats he built, the waters he loved, and the countless lives he touched with his passion for life.  His spirit will forever be a part of the tides he cherished, and he will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest in peace, Chris. You've set sail on your final voyage, and the waters are calm where you now rest.
