Claire Mary (Sullivan) Mitchell, 89, of Marco Island, Florida and formerly of Marshfield, MA passed away on October 14, 2018 at home surrounded by love. Beloved daughter of the late Daniel Joseph and Helen J. (Flynn) Sullivan, she was born and raised in Malden, MA.  She was the beloved wife John J. Mitchell, Jr. for 44 years until his death in 1996. She was also the sister of the late Lawrence Manley.

Claire is survived by her loving family: her son John J. Mitchell, III and his wife Ruthanne (Rossi) Mitchell of Oldsmar, Florida, her daughter Maureen Yamartino and her husband William Yamartino of Abington, her son Daniel J. Mitchell of Hampstead, NH. She also leaves her devoted grandson, Mark J. Mitchell and his wife Catherine Mitchell of Palm Harbor, Florida and her precious great-grandson John James Mitchell IV.  She also leaves several cousins, nieces and many dear friends. Claire was a 42-year Breast Cancer survivor.

Claire was a graduate of Malden Girls Catholic High, class of 1947. She was employed by the Town of Hanover for 25 years, most of those years at the Hanover Junior High-Middle School as the office manager. She was a recipient of the Plymouth County Education Association's Distinguished Service Award in appreciation for outstanding support and interest in public education.

Her life-long love of the ocean began by spending summers in Brant Rock at her grandmother Flynn's cottage. In 1950 her father purchased The Fairview Inn on Ocean Street.  She met her future husband, John, in the fall of 1952 at a dance in Cambridge, MA. She came home from the dance and told her mother she had just met the man she was going to marry! They were married 6 months later, on Valentine's Day in 1953. They moved to Marshfield in 1954 and raised their family in Brant Rock.

In the late 80's Claire and John went to Marco Island, Florida and eventually became snow birds, returning to Brant Rock for the summer months. After John's death, Claire resided in Marco Island, Florida.  She volunteered as a CCD Teacher at St. Ann's, a Girl Scout leader and worked at the election polls. Claire had many hobbies and interests including daily walking, oil painting, watching movies, eating lobster, seafood and traveling. She especially enjoyed cruises. Claire also loved any and every opportunity to dance!

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street, Marshfield. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life reception at Haddad's Ocean Cafe, 291 Ocean Street, Marshfield immediately following the close of visiting hours.
