Clifton Robert Thayer, born November 8, 1936, passed away in his home at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Ann Thayer. He leaves behind his four children, Nancy Thayer, Caroline Malone, Peter Thayer, and Jonathan Thayer. He also leaves behind six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by several nephews and nieces.
Clifton was the second youngest of seven children to Paul and Virginia Thayer. He and his family grew up in Worcester while summering at their cottage in York Beach, Maine which has been in the family now for nearly a century.
He and his wife Dorothy and their four kids moved to Marshfield around 1966. He and his wife shared a passion for antiques which led them to pour their heart and soul into an old house that they lived in for the past fifty years. They also loved to take long drives on the weekends, some of them unplanned. They would just go out to get a cup of coffee in the morning at Marshfield Center and end up down on Cape Cod.
Clifton, more often called Clif, made his career in marine engineering, designing piping systems mainly for Navy vessels that were already in service. He travelled often later in his career, at one point going as far as Japan. He was also handy at carpentry, a skill that came in handy during the renovations to his family's Marshfield home.
After his retirement, Clif spent time with his wife Dorothy. A lot of their summers were spent at the family cottage in Maine. He took up basket weaving, mainly Nantucket baskets, becoming quite proficient at it. He also would oversee continuing renovations his sons would make to his home in Marshfield, having passed his carpentry skills onto them. His last years were ones of peace and quiet.
Clifton will be cremated, and his family will hold onto the ashes until the passing of his wife, then they will have a burial ceremony for both of them. A memorial service for Clifton will be held at a later date attended by family and close friends.
