Welch, Daniel A, of Marshfield, passed away on April 2, 2017 at the age of 83. Daniel was the beloved husband of the late Judith Welch of Marshfield and dear father of Kathleen Welch Hudson and her husband Robert of Stoneham and the late Daniel J. Welch, his grandchildren Daniel and Sara Hudson, nieces Donna Pinto of Lakeville, Patricia Schlatz of Bridgewater, nephews Thomas Schlatz of Plymouth and John Schlatz of Bridgewater.
Daniel grew up in Dorchester Massachusetts and spent many summers with his grandparents in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He moved to Marshfield after his marriage to Judith.
Daniel had spent over 30 years in law enforcement, twenty of those years as a Marshfield Police Officer. He had begun his career as a Massachusetts State Trooper in 1956 and was appointed a full time police officer for the Town of Marshfield in 1966. In addition to being a Marshfield police officer, he became the Town Safety officer in 1968 and he would go to the Marshfield schools to educate the children about safety, many times using magic tricks. In 1974 he was appointed Sergeant, and later, appointed to Lieutenant in 1981. Dan left the Marshfield police department to be appointed the Chief of Police for the Town of Kingston, MA. He retired in 1987. Dan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement from Northeastern University and a Master's degree from Boston University majoring in Urban Planning.
Daniel spent over thirty years in the Military, serving in the Army/Army Reserve. He retired in 1993 with the rank of Colonel of Military Police U.S.A.R.
Dan's passion was that of an educator. He was a Senior lecturer in law enforcement for Northeastern University for several years. In 1978 he was appointed as the Official campus representative to Northeastern University at the Marshfield high school campus. With over 750 students taking college classes, Dan had encouraged many students to complete their Northeastern University education. He was a lecturer at the Southeastern Mass and Plymouth Police academy helping to educate and train new law enforcement officers in Southeastern Massachusetts.
Dan had lived in Marshfield for over 50 years and enjoyed giving back to the community. He truly enjoyed traveling abroad with his late wife Judy, traveling across the United States and to England, Wales, Scotland, Bermuda and Italy several times. Dan was also an avid model train collector and would spend time with family and friends running his trains for them.
Dan was a member of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, Southeastern Massachusetts Chiefs of Police, Knight of Columbus, First Corp of Cadets, 211 Military Battalion and a member of the Green Harbor Yacht Club.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street (Rte. 139) Marshfield. Funeral procession from the funeral home on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 8:00 a.m. for a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 40 Canal Street, Marshfield. Burial will be in Couch Cemetery.
