Hartwell, David G., of Westport NY, passed away on January 20, 2016 at the age of 74. David is survived by his wife, Kathryn Cramer, his four children Alison, Geoffrey, Peter, and Elizabeth, his sisters Rebecca Chin and Janice Hartwell, and his first wife Patricia Wolcott Hartwell.
David Hartwell was an award-winning editor of fantasy and science fiction novels and one of most influential science fiction editors of his generation. David earned a B.A. from Williams College, a Master's Degree from Colgate, Doctorate from Columbia University. He was an editor in the mold of Maxwell Perkins and Clifton Fadiman, engaged not just with book acquisition bit also with crafting the best books possible. David had been an editor with Tor Books since the early 1980's and also published dozens of highly regarded anthologies, many edited with his wife Kathryn Cramer. He cared about science fiction reviewing and criticism and so published the New York Review of Science Fiction out of his home.
David was known for wearing colorful neckties and for leading groups of science fiction fans in the singing of "Teen Angel" at 3:00 AM at Science Fiction conventions. At the time of his death he was still at the height of his powers as an editor and had expected to continue working with science fiction for at least another decade. Dearly loved by his family and friends, David will be greatly missed.
