David Joseph Macdonald, 81, passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2022 after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his family.
He was the husband to his beloved wife of 51 years, Diane (Darcy) Macdonald, and devoted father to his son, David Macdonald (Kerri); his son, Luke Macdonald; and his daughter, Mary Ellen Guittarr (Charles). He leaves behind his brother, James Macdonald, and his sister, Claire Klier (Robert). He was Papa to his dear grandchildren, Lindsay, Kara (Joseph), Jacqueline (Dylan), Craig, Casey, Colin, Clay, and Hope; and three great-grandchildren, Charlie, Christopher, and Chloe. Additionally, he leaves behind many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins, and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Margaret (Redmond) Macdonald, his sister, Carol Sullivan (John), and his brother Andrew (Frances).
Born in Boston on June 25, 1940 and raised in Charlestown and Winthrop, he resided in Marshfield for the past 45 years. He loved his second home in Kinvara, Ireland, which he traveled to for 25 years, and the winters spent in Florida.
Dave was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corp for six years, stationed in Vietnam and California, where he served as a machine operator and drill sergeant. He then began his career at the Boston Edison electric utility company, working as a splicer. In 1969, he met his future wife, Diane, and they married the following year. He retired from the Edison after three decades, in 1995.
His children and grandchildren were the light of his life, and he was well-known for his jokes and stories.
Among Dave's many interests were fishing, whittling, camping, listening to Irish music, watching Boston sports, reading, and working in and around the house. There wasn't a floor he didn't clean, a window he didn't wash, and a shirt he didn't iron. "I do everything but have babies," he quipped to his wife. Dave also loved food and eating, and picked many a chicken bone clean. The smile on his face and twinkle in his eye will be missed by all who knew him. Kind and generous, he was a true gentleman.
