Obituary

MARSHFIELD -David W. Smith "Smitty", of Marshfield passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 13, 2023 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton.

Mr. Smith was born in Allston on March 7, 1945. At age 13, he moved with his family to Marshfield (Rexhame Beach), where he remained a life-long resident until his passing. David was a graduate of the Marshfield High School Class of 1963. After losing his best friend, James "Jimmy" Mahler, a Marine killed in action in the Vietnam War, David immediately enlisted in the Marine Corps to honor the life and death of his best friend. He served his country and was honorably discharged in May of 1970. Mr Smith would make it his life's mission to honor his friend Jimmy as well as other veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Many will remember Mr. Smith holding a sign honoring his friend "Jimmy" at busy Marshfield intersections over the years.

David continued his support of many underserved groups and agencies through his constant philanthropy. He worked tirelessly for such programs as "Fallen Heroes" street sign program and the Honor Rolls Veterans Memorial in Marshfield. He also gave generously to St Jude's Hospital, American Cancer Society, and the Apsaalooke Indian Tribe of Montana, among others.

David spent his entire career at Pembroke Country Club as a grounds supervisor, a job he cherished and spoke of often.  He was an active and beloved member of North River Community Church where he touched the lives of many families with his kindness and loving nature. He was an active parishioner and cherished the many relationships made there.

David was an avid and accomplished poet. He loved to share his poetry through public readings and special hand-delivered poems. He was well known for sharing his poems with the many Dunkin Donut drive-thru clerks in and around Marshfield.

He is survived by his sister, Gloria (Smith) Corbett, of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, his former wife Kathleen Dentino of Jefferson, MA and many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his sister, Joan (Smith) Parker and his parents George H and Annie G. Smith of Newfoundland. He is also survived by best friends, Courtney Urbanus of Middleboro and Joseph Hannigan of Kingston. He is also survived by special families like the Falcos and Countless other special friends and fellow parishioners of North River Community Church.

In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Smith will be cremated through arrangements by MacDonald Funeral Home and Cremation Care Services of Marshfield.
