Donald Salmond (Don) of Scituate, Massachusetts died on Sunday, June 28th after a brief illness.
Don was born in Packanack Lake, New Jersey on October 11th, 1946. After finishing high school, he enrolled in Northeastern University in Boston as part of its ROTC program, to study engineering, graduating with a Bachelor and Master of Science in civil engineering. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army for three years after graduation. Don went on to have a successful 40-plus year career as an Environmental Health and Safety engineer.
In Boston, Don met, through friends, his first wife Joanne Morrissey. Don and Joanne wed in Dorchester, Massachusetts in October, 1970. They were happily married for three decades, raising two sons Brendan and Terrence, until Joanne’s unexpected passing in June 2008. In the years following, he was fortunate to meet his future wife Patricia (Pat) Hess. Don and Pat were married in Marshfield, Massachusetts on September 16th, 2011 in a ceremony celebrated by friends and family.
Don had the opportunity to live in several beautiful locations in the United States including San Francisco, Hudson, New Hampshire, and Lexington and Scituate in Massachusetts. He was an avid traveller for business and pleasure. When not gardening, cooking, or fixing everything by hand, Don greatly enjoyed being outdoors, with a keen interest in open water and sailing. For the past decade, Don was enthusiastically involved with a local community-based workshop that built and restored wooden boats and provided stewardship over a historical South Shore boat landing. He practiced yoga weekly, enjoyed kayaking, and loved to take long walks with numerous dogs over the years.
Don and Pat traveled widely, to southern Africa, New Zealand, Indonesia, and various places in Europe, the Caribbean, and South America.
Don will be deeply missed by his surviving family including his wife, Pat Hess, his two sons Brendan and Terrence Salmond, and their partners and children. He loved his four granddaughters (Asavari, Ellora, Lucille, and Freyja) very much.
A memorial service for Don will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at The Vedanta Centre, 130 Beechwood St., Cohasset. Parking is on the sides of the driveway coming in, and straight ahead below the Temple. Carpooling, if possible, is recommended.
