Dorothy Ann (Hein) Hayes, a retired Plymouth school teacher of many years, died at Loomis Lakeside in Western Massachusetts of natural causes. She was 94 years young.
Dorothy, "Dottie", was born in New Britian, CT and lived in Marshfield since 1969 where she raised her family. She graduated from Manchester High School 1948 in Connecticut and attended most annual reunions since graduation. Dorothy attended UCONN and Bay Path College. She worked for the CIA for 5 years while earning her BS from American University in Washington DC. Attending Suffolk University in Boston, she earned her Master's Degree in Business Administration in 1977.
In Marshfield, she was a Girl Scout leader while her 3 girls were in the program. She was a lead teacher at the nursery school at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Hanover. As well as substituting at schools around the South Shore, Dottie began her 16 years of teaching business and social studies in the Plymouth School system, where she retired in 1999.
As a "student forever", Dottie enrolled in the adult education program at UMASS Boston. Courses taken there were a rewarding part of her educational life. She enjoyed Spanish, Zumba and Lifeline classes at the Council on Aging in Marshfield, as well as being director of the COA Boosters.
Dorothy was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross, in Hanover, having served on the church council as Deacon of Christian Education, Deacon of Evangelism and Deacon of Missions. Church membership was an important part of her life. For 9 years, she was a member of the House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Hingham as well as attended the afternoon Services at Sanctuary church in Marshfield.
Dorothy loved to travel! She traveled Europe extensively and took multiple cruises with her father to the Caribbean. Visits to Mexico, Venezuela and Puerto Rico gave her the opportunity to make use of her knowledge of the Spanish language. Highlight of her travel was a trip to Israel and Germany, following the footsteps of Jesus and Martin Luther. Attending the Passion Play in Oberammagau, Germany, was very special as it only is presented every 10 years. Continuing her biblical travels, Dottie went to Turkey and Greece following the footsteps of St. Paul.
Serving as a missionary and teacher of English to adults in Bangkok, Thailand in 2001, brought her great satisfaction. In the 7 weeks she worked there, she gained a great respect for the Thai people and was a lover of their food. In 2013 Dorothy spent time in Honduras, also as a missionary. In 2015, she was a missionary to Brazil with Pastor Lance and his family, which was a rewarding experience.
She enjoyed golfing, biking, Zumba, line dancing and the Plymouth Fitness Center. She was a lifelong member of South Shore Singles, Marshfield Historical Society and the historic Winslow House. As an educator, Dorothy was a member of the Massachusetts Teacher Association, and Plymouth Retired Education Association. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, Pilgrim Society and Pilgrim Hall Museum.
She leaves her 3 daughters, Christine Chrzanowski and husband, Ron of Putnam, CT, her two children, Stephanie Caine, husband Tyler of Twin Falls, ID and Douglas Pineo and wife Danielle, of Boise, ID. Daughter Alison Siller and husband Peter and their daughter Elizabeth of West Springfield, MA and daughter Kimberly Cass and her husband, Chester of Westfield, MA. She has 4 great grandchildren, TyTy, Roman, and Aspen all of Idaho, and Neko from Utah.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday, October 8th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MacDonald's Funeral Home in Marshfield. Funeral service will be on Wednesday, October 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Hanover followed by a light reception. Burial will be in the East Cemetery in Manchester, CT where her infant brother George Edward, grandparents, parents, and infant grandson, Matthew Edward Siller are buried.
In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Hanover, Dorothy Hayes Mission Fund. Per her request, only one red rose will adorn her casket at her burial.
