Obituary

Douglas E. Nieh, of Marshfield, passed away on March 16, 2021 at the age of 90.

Douglas was born in Cambridge, MA to parents, John K. Nieh and Else Hildegard (Muhle). He adored his older sister, Margaret, who was 3 years older than Doug. As a young boy, Doug was presented with a number of challenges, including being responsible for the care of his grandmother and the family's boarding house, along with working at the Broadway Supermarket at the age of 13 to contribute to providing for the family, while he continued to attend school. He taught dance at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio and worked at the Sunshine Cookie Company. He maintained life-long friendships with his two closest friends, Gene DiBenedetto and Dick Gurner, as well as a special connection with his brother-in-law, Irving (Buddy) Douglas and his wife, Berenice. He also maintained a close relationship with Lori DiBona, his "right hand" at Polaroid and a constant source of support and friendship.

At the age of 25, he began working for Polaroid Corporation. Through his 33-year career with Polaroid, he advanced to become the North American and then Worldwide Manager of Consumer Eyewear Products, responsible for manufacturing to marketing of their sunglass and polarizing lens products. He accepted early retirement from Polaroid and started his own company, DEN Enterprises, and developed the product lines of Glareshield and Clip-N-Flip consumer sunglasses. He also served as an expert witness for product liability cases and was the President of the Sunglass Association of America (SAA) and served on ANSI Standards Boards in the area of International Trade and Development.

In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, including his furry buddy, Spencer. He welcomed the addition of his precious granddaughter, Nicola, who was the apple of his eye and a constant source of pride. His face lit up every time she entered the room.

Douglas was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Loretta (Douglas) and is survived by his daughter Janica Nieh Midiri, her husband Patrick (whom he adored and respected) and their daughter, Nicola. He also had a special place in his heart for his honorary daughter, Monique (Antoine) Cloutier. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly.
