Obituary

Jones, Eileen A. (Roberts), of Plymouth, passed away on August 12, 2016 at the age of 78. Beloved wife of Ronald C. Jones of Plymouth and dear mother of Alison Jones of Marshfield. Eileen leaves her sister and brother in-law Marion and Kenneth Woolfall of England, her nieces and nephews Julia, Neil, Clare, and Craig and great nieces and nephews Maya, Reece, Ethan and Alex as well as sisters and brothers in-law Pat and Malcolm McCulloch and Amy and Arthur Jones, and their families.

Eileen was born on January 28, 1938 in Moreton, England. Her parents were George and Ethel Roberts. She had one sister: Marion. She was just one year old when the Second World War began. Many days were spent at the air raid shelter built in the back garden. One bomb fell on the next avenue, demolishing the house. The war years were lean on food and candy. Rationing continued to 1952. Eileen went to school until she was 15 years old and was a 'head girl' at the secondary school. When she left school, she worked as a baker, and then as a dental receptionist. She enjoyed Scottish dancing & bicycling. While bicycling she met her husband's sister Amy. Eileen and Ron teamed up and she was seen often riding with him on his Velocette motorbike. They became engaged and married on October 18, 1960.

Their only child, Alison, was born on February 27, 1964 and quickly became 'the apple of her nana and grandpa's eye'. Alison finished school in the US, eventually obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Aviation Management and an Associate's in Business. Like her mother before her, Alison became a member of the Student body government, won three awards for her efforts as a leader.

In the 1960's the USA advertised in England for skilled engineers to go to the USA for work. So, on December 22, 1969 – the whole family immigrated to the US, as a good number of their friends had already 'crossed the pond'. Quite a feat for a young family.

Once in the US, they lived in Green Harbor, then Marshfield where she met many new friends, like Ralph and Margie Mattivello, Mary and John Young, Carol and Jon Ruhr, Phyllis and John Copponi – all of whom visited her during her illness. She did work as a house cleaner, an Avon distributor and as a hair salon receptionist. She joined a local ceramic class called Patsy's Funny Farm and all her family received Christmas villages, Christmas trees & cats.

Although she suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis since the age of 20 – she still loved to needlepoint. She loved to return 'home' to England a few times a year. One of her favorite hobbies was searching sales for bargains so when she returned to England – she had her suitcases full of things for her nieces, Julia and Clare, and in later years, her grandniece and grandnephews Maya, Reece, Ethan and Alex. She also donated many items to the Marshfield Community Christmas: typically donating a dozen Christmas trees and decorations for other families – a tradition her daughter will uphold.

Eileen LOVED to travel, with her sister, her husband, her daughter over the years (and many more family members) she visited Canada, Niagara Falls, Rockies, and Vancouver, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, San Francisco, Banff, Seattle, and of course, the entire British isles. A favorite place is the Lake District, visiting her husband's sisters in Cambridge and Toronto and two trips to Italy. When Ron retired, they decided to move to the PMECC and they enjoyed 18 years there –making even more good friends.

Over the years, Eileen's house has been a haven for many animals – cats, guinea pigs, birds (loved those Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal) and when they moved to Plymouth, she had a particular affection for the big blue bird called Bluey/Kevin – a full grown male peacock who has run of the place.

Eileen had a strong spirit and although her health was not good, she was determined to carry on as normal as possible.

Her family would like to express their gratitude for the many people who helped her final journey – from Golden Living and Cranberry Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eileen's memory can be made to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Plymouth MA 02360
