Elaine Louise Mirtsching died on January 11, 2026. She was 94 years old and had been in poor health for many years.

Elaine was born in 1931 and grew up in Jamaica Plain, a Boston neighborhood, with her parents Emeric and Cecilia Surette during the great depression. Those years, and especially FDR, helped shape her world view for life. She attended Boston public schools and was selected for the prestigious Girls Latin high school. After graduating she attended Emmanuel College in Boston. After graduation she married and had 4 children. In 1963 the family moved to Marshfield, MA.

Elaine had already been active in the League of Women Voters and quickly became involved in town politics. She got her master's degree in education at Boston College and taught early grades in Marshfield until her retirement in 1995. Always active in local politics, she was elected president of the Marshfield Teachers Association for multiple terms. When she retired the town honored her with a retirement party at Marshfield CC on her birthday, June 6. The turn-out was substantial and included speeches by town and state dignitaries. She was deeply committed to making the world a better place. She also knew how to throw a fantastic party.

Elaine leaves 3 sons; Steven (72) of Hanover, MA; David (71) of Seekonk, MA; and Brian (65) of Marshfield, MA. A daughter, Susan, passed in 1999. In addition to her 3 surviving children, she leaves 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Her husband Len Mirtsching died in 2008.

Family and friends are welcome to gather on Saturday, January 17, 2026 beginning at 8:30 am at the MacDonalds Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street, Marshfield, followed by a funeral procession to Our Lady of the Angels Church (St Mary’s Church) in Hanover where the funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am.
