Ellen Flatley passed away unexpectedly on May 6, 2026, after a short illness, surrounded by the love of her family. She lived a life centered on family, friendship, faith, and dedication to others.
Born and raised in West Roxbury, Ellen later made her home in Belmont, where she raised her family and became a beloved member of the community. From a young age, she spent her summers in Marshfield, where she found joy and peace at the beach with family and friends. In later years, she treasured her winters in Delray Beach, Florida, where dear friends and neighbors became an extension of her family.
A gifted educator, Ellen dedicated many years to teaching mathematics at Belmont High School, where she was adored by her students and colleagues alike. Her patience, warmth, and encouragement left a lasting impact on generations of students, and she treasured the many friendships she formed throughout her career.
Ellen embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. She loved traveling the world, spending time with loved ones, and volunteering through her church and local communities. She had a remarkable gift for connection, welcoming lifelong friends, new friends, neighbors, colleagues, and family with the same warmth and care.
Ellen was predeceased by her beloved husband and the love of her life, James D. Flatley, with whom she shared 41 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life grounded in love, family, faith, and community. Known for her kindness, resilience, intelligence, and strong spirit, Ellen touched the lives of all who knew her.
She is survived by her loving children, Paul Flatley of Florida, Kate Pagliocca and her husband Michael of Belmont, and Kara Rielly and her husband Kevin of Marshfield. She was the devoted grandmother of Kevin, Lauren, Andrea, Steven, Amanda, and Kristina, and a proud great-grandmother of Jamie, Tara, Ayla, Rowan, Brooke, Tyler, Cameron, and Macy.
Butterflies were a meaningful symbol to Ellen, gentle reminders of hope, beauty, and transformation. When you see a butterfly, may you think of Ellen and the many lives she touched with her compassion, generosity, and unwavering love.
