Obituary

Faith Ann (Penniman) Jean (December 14, 1931 – January 26, 2025)

Faith A. (Penniman) Jean of Whitman, MA and Brant Rock, MA went to Glory on January 26, 2025. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Howard R. Jean, daughter Phyllis McCarthy and grandson Hugh Russell Casely.

Faith, daughter of F. Gardner Penniman and Doris Penniman, spent her childhood and early years of marriage in Whitman, MA. Faith took pride in her community serving as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, president of the Whitman Mothers Club, and as an elected board member of the Whitman Hanson Regional High School Committee.

In 1974, Faith, Howard and their family permanently moved to Brant Rock living in an ancestral home.

Her extensive community work, both voluntary and elected, will be her legacy. Faith was President of the Brant Rock Civic Association for 10 years that strove to make the voices of the village residents heard. She was proud to be on the Board of Directors of the Committee for the Preservation of Dwyer Farm for the People of Marshfield which successfully transferred the 352- acre farm to the Audubon Society.  Now known as the Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary, the Sanctuary provides many outdoor amenities for the citizens of Marshfield.

From 1992-2001, Faith was elected three times to serve on the Marshfield Board of Selectmen.  Her last community project was the Senior Center when she served on the Building Committee. Faith also was a two-term president of the Center's fundraising Boosters.

Perhaps Faith's greatest gift to her community was her love and hope for the preservation of the Brant Rock Union Chapel. Since the early 1960's until her death she was determined to see that the church served the Brant Rock community. Her long tenured service on the Board of Trustees will be sorely missed.

Her lifetime pride has been her children, and she is survived by daughter Cynthia Cook and husband Bert; daughter Katherine Jean; son Howard Roy Jean Jr and wife Maureen; son Thomas G. Jean and wife Michelle, son-in-law Michael McCarthy; and daughter April Hillier and husband Wayne. Faith was grandmother to 15 children and great-grandmother to 19 children. She loved them all.

Charitable donations can be made to the Brant Rock Union Chapel, by mail to P.O. Box 177, Brant Rock, MA 02020

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Brant Rock Union Chapel, 327 Ocean Street in Brant Rock.
