A friend said it so eloquently, "Fran treated everyone, even a stranger as if they were his best friend". Francis J. Callery of Worcester and Green Harbor passed away quietly into Our Lord's hands on January 17th after a short stay at the Pat Roche Hospice House in Hingham, MA.
Francis was predeceased by "the love of his life" Alice L. Callery and his older brother Thomas Callery. Francis leaves behind his caretakers and loving daughters – Alys and Jim Covello and Jean and Charlie Olsson of Green Harbor with whom he lived for the last two and a half years. He also leaves behind a loving daughter Joan Callery of Green Harbor. Family was everything to Francis and he adored his three grandchildren – Christopher, Shawn and Cara. In later years, he especially enjoyed his visits to Cape Cod to visit his sister Carol and her husband Tony. Carol was always quick to boast about her wonderful big brother. In addition, Francis leaves behind his extended family of nieces and nephews – all of whom were his favorite.
Francis is one of the last of the Greatest Generation and his stories and legacy will live on through all those who were lucky enough to be in his presence. He enlisted in the service at sixteen and served during World War II and again as a Navy corpsman in the Korean War. Proud of his service to his country, Francis still carried his original Navy ID card in his wallet. After returning home, Francis continued his education graduating from the former Worcester State Teachers College in 1953, with a degree in education followed by his Master's plus in Education. Francis taught in the Worcester school system until his retirement in 1991.
Along with many of his service friends, Francis was a longtime member of the American Legion Post in Worcester. Francis was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus Alhambra Council in Worcester where he was a bartender for many years before moving to his summer home in Green Harbor. Later in life spending time with friends and family at the Venus 2 was his favorite pastime. Enjoying a few drafts and playing Keno added to the fun-especially when he won! People gravitated towards Fran, his warm and welcoming personality was infectious.
During the last few years of his life, Francis became active with the Korean War Vets Association at the Marshfield Senior Center. The Veterans embraced Francis and showed their appreciation for his service by voting him to be the Grand Marshall at the 2022 Memorial Day Parade. He was treated with dignity and respect by these amazing men who served to preserve the rights we all enjoy today. So, one last time – Thank you Francis for your service!
