Francis "Mike" O'Toole, of Marshfield, passed away suddenly yet peacefully Tuesday July 23rd, 2024, at the age of 81. A Marshfield resident for 51 years, Mike was born in Boston, MA on November 22, 1942, to the late Francis and Doris O'Toole. He grew up in Dorchester and graduated from Dorchester High School in 1962. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in the Vietnam War earning four medals for his service. When he returned home from the war he started dating the love of his life, Paula (Cummings) O'Toole, and they were married on July 25,1970. In 1973 they moved to Marshfield where they raised their family together.
Mike was a member of the Teamsters Union working for Burke Distributing for over 30 years before his retirement. He formed many friendships with "the guys" at work who became like a second family to him. When he wasn't working, you could always find him in his backyard playing catch with his children, shooting hoops in the driveway with them, or watching sports on TV. He never missed any of his children's sporting events and he carried that tradition on with his grandchildren until Alzheimer's Disease affected his life. He loved his family immeasurably and they were his proudest achievement.
Those who knew Mike, knew he was a quiet and shy man. As the disease progressed, he moved into the Memory Care Unit at The Village at Proprietors Green in Marshfield where he came out of his shell and bloomed as a social butterfly. He became friends with many, leading in group activities and was always willing to help others. He was also known as the jokester within the unit with his quick wit and great sense of humor.
Husband of the late Paula O'Toole for 28 years, he is survived by his daughter Colleen Bell (Brian) of Marshfield, his son Timothy O'Toole (Kerry) of Weymouth, and his five grandchildren Ryan Bell, Kaleigh Bell, and Erin Bell of Marshfield, as well as Casey O'Toole, and Sean O'Toole of Weymouth.
In keeping with Mike's wishes, services will be private. He will be buried with his wife at the Bourne National Cemetery on July 31st. Donations in his memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association at https://www.alz.org
