Francis J, Sampson Jr, age 78, of Duxbury, formerly of Marshfield, passed away Friday Nov 5, with his family by his side. Frank was predeceased by his parents Francis J. Sampson Sr and Margaret (Ronan) Sampson, his wife Dianne (dePourtales) Sampson, his brother Stephen A. Sampson and his sister Patricia (Sampson) Kent. He is survived by his wife Doris Eldridge-Sampson of Duxbury, his son James F Sampson and wife Kimberly, daughter Gretchen (Sampson) Redinbaugh and husband Derek, and son Jeffrey F Sampson and wife Jacqueline, all of Marshfield. Beloved grandfather to Kendall and Jake Sampson, Owen and Colin Redinbaugh and Jocelyn Sampson of Marshfield. Loving brother of Pamela Sampson of Sherborn and Paula Sampson-Ballaro of Lynnfield.
Frank was born and raised in Everett, MA until his family moved to Marshfield in 1958. He started high school in Marshfield where he met his high school sweetheart, Dianne. They dated throughout high school, college and while Frank served in Vietnam in the United States Army. He was a decorated Staff Sergeant and was awarded numerous medals for his courageous efforts. As soon as he came home from the war in 1969 he married Dianne, they had 3 children together and were happily married until her passing in 2005. He later found comfort in his time spent with Doris and they married in 2013.
Frank spent the majority of his life self-employed in various trades from fixing cars to building houses and everything in between. As the son of a used car salesman and a factory worker, he understood the value of determination and hard work. He was a perfectionist in many ways and always wanted the best for everyone around him, even though he never seemed to be able to finish a project. He had a passion for cars, especially Fords, and thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon at the car show, occasionally showing off a few of his own antique cars.
Frank cared deeply for his family and was incredibly selfless, he always put others ahead of himself. He loved being "Papa" to his grandchildren, always threating to scrumble their bellies or pop them in the snoot. He always had an abundant supply of tootsie rolls that he was happy to fill their pockets with when their parents weren't looking. Frank always made a grand entrance into a room, and everyone was thrilled that he was there. He made everyone in his life feel like the most important person in the world, and he ALWAYS showed up with the biggest gift. He was an invaluable source of wisdom and knowledge, he could fix or build anything and he never hesitated to help anyone who needed it. Most of all, he was the one person that everyone could rely on. From the time he was a teenager looking out for his siblings up until his passing he was always willing to lend a helping hand and never wanted anything in return.
