Frank L. Vilkas, of Ocean Bluff, MA, formerly of Hanson, left us as the sun rose on March 13, 2025 surrounded by the love of his life, Sharon and his three daughters following a courageous battle with cancer.
Frank was born in Boston on January 9, 1942 to the late Frank E. Vilkas and Ursula (Kaupis) Vilkas. He is survived by his wife Sharon Vilkas, his daughters Elise Dauksevicz and her husband Paul of Hanson, Kimberly Oliveira and her husband Robert of Bridgewater, and Nicole Tomaszewski and her husband Timothy of Sterling. He was the best "Papa Snoops" to Nicholas Dauksevicz and his wife Olivia, Sophia Dauksevicz, Brianne and Victoria Oliveira, and Samantha and Aidan Tomaszewski. He is also survived by his sister Ursula McBreairty and husband Doug, brother-in-law Ken Hartwick and Ria, and his cousin and fishing buddy Vinny Rams and his wife Donna.
Frank attended Boston English High School and Northeastern University graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He began his career at the Boston Naval Shipyard as a structural engineer in the Public Works Department and worked on the construction of the Charles River Dam. Frank then worked for the Army Corps of Engineers. He was the resident engineer for the rehabilitation of the Sagamore and Bourne bridges in the early 1980's. He finished his career as the resident engineer in the Rivers and Harbors area office before retiring in 1991. Frank was a Licensed Professional Engineer.
While his career was important to him, it was his family that brought him the greatest fulfillment. Frank's love for Sharon was a storybook love story which he would often share. He first saw her when he was 15 years old and knew she was the one he would marry. Using his intellect and charm, Frank worked hard to win her over, marrying her in 1962. The years they spent together were the most joyful of his life, and Frank cherished his time with his "Snoops".
As a father, Frank supported his daughters unconditionally and showed them the importance of hard work and integrity. He fostered independence and encouraged each of his daughters to pursue their career and lives with no boundaries. Above all he was the best "girl dad" and was always available to lend a helping hand or advice when needed. Sharing daily Wordle scores with Dad will be missed!
Frank enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. "Papa's" clever sense of humor and quizzical nature made for entertaining visits. He was proud of his whimsical shell art and SpongeBob dioramas. Papa's presence at family gatherings will be missed.
Frank loved to spend time on the water fishing for striped bass and fluke. An annual fishing trip aboard the 'Aquarius' became a family tradition. He could often be found on the flats of Chatham digging shellfish together with family. This sometimes became a bit competitive as he liked to count and compare his harvests! An avid gardener, he tended to his vegetables, flowers and fruit trees also documenting these harvests in case we were keeping score. Frank was quick to share his fishing, shell fishing and vegetable harvests with all he knew. During fall he would hunt birds, deer and even moose and spent time in winter snowmobiling with his sister in Allagash, ME. Frank was a skilled cribbage player and would play anytime with friends and family, especially most recently with his new friends at the Marshfield COA.
Frank will be deeply missed, but his kind heart, honest nature and witty intellect will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
