Obituary

Habel, Jr., Frederick H. "Fred", of Marshfield, passed away on October 13, 2021 peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 92. Beloved husband of Margaret C. (Sandiford) Habel. Son of the late Frederick, Sr. and Martha Habel. Loving father of Carol Herb and her husband Mark Sills of Marshfield, Anne Hillner and her husband David of Marshfield, Linda Alvarez and her husband Alex of Scituate, and the late Kathleen Botelho and her husband Wayne of Plymouth. Grandfather of Brandon, Richard, Michael, Daniel, Octavia and Nicolas. Great-grandfather of Ricky, Jack, Fred, Ava, Maggie, and Mikey. Dear brother of Robert Habel of Marshfield, the late Mildred Gladney, and the late Reinhold Habel. Fred also leaves many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Fred was born at home in West Roxbury. He graduated from Boston Technical High School and then served his country in the United States Navy, stationed for a time in Iceland. He summered with his family in Brant Rock where he began his lifelong career as a commercial fisherman and lobsterman, starting at the age of 11. He had an amazing work ethic and fished continuously for 78 years. Fred met his beautiful wife, Margie, on a weekend trip to Atlantic City. On their first date they went to Sunday mass together. Fred truly enjoyed Sunday dinners with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered around the dining room table or by his pool. After cold winter days on the ocean, Fred looked forward to heading south to his second home in Redington Shores, Florida to enjoy the warmth and sunshine. A longtime member of the Korean War Veteran's Association, the Massachusetts Lobstermen's Association and the South Shore Lobster Fishermen's Association. He set an example for so many people by the way he led his life.
