Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Gene Nash, 80, a long-time Marshfield resident, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully surrounded by family at South Shore Hospital on April 13, 2023. Her beautiful presence will be missed forever.
Gene is survived by her husband, Bob, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage; her sister Ginger and brother Joseph; son, Chris (and husband, Rich), Bill (and wife, Laura), and Jennifer (and husband, Scott Phinney); and four precious grandchildren (Hannah, Zachary, Jacob, and Joshua). Scores of extended family and close friends and neighbors also mourn the passing of this marvelous and thoughtful woman.
She was predeceased by her twin sister, Edna, and her parents, Bertha and Geno Zammarchi.
With a contagious Boston accent, fearless independence and a zest for living, Gene started her journey in life in South Boston, one of four children in the Zammarchi family home. She attended Bicknell Junior High School in North Weymouth, and North Weymouth High School. Being childhood sweethearts, Bob and Gene were married in 1965 and started their family a few years later.
Throughout her life, Gene was the type of person who would go out of her way to make others feel valued, who would drop everything she was doing and run to help them in any way. She would do just about anything for anyone, showing her devotion in many ways. Whether it was volunteering, babysitting, making people laugh, or simply being a consoler, anyone who met Gene knew she had a special gift of being focused on other people and left an imprint of care, compassion, and support. Despite her own discomfort from arthritis, Gene became a constant source of light for those experiencing dark days.
Gene was known to friends and family as someone who could talk about a wide range of topics, including conversations about the Red Sox, TV shows, international events, and health. She was always a kind person who, remarkably, managed to have heated discussions without uttering a curse word or ridiculing another point of view. But one thing no one could argue with: Her belief that the Boston sports teams were the best in the country! Even into her 70s, Gene was a fan who celebrated when her team won--and even when they lost.
Several times a year, Gene, her family, and friends would travel to Kennebunkport, Maine, staying at the 120 year-old home that her great-grandparents purchased at the turn of the 20th century. This home was her "happy place," the place where she could unwind, sit in the sun, sip a beer, and reminisce about old times.
Gene was a very faithful person, attending St. Ann by the Sea as a regular parishioner. When she couldn't attend mass, she was a constant source of inspiration as she sat in front of the TV, streaming a Sunday service without interruption. But her faith transcended church viewing and attendance. She frequently helped those who were more vulnerable and those who, sadly, passed away before her.
Gene Nash touched everyone she encountered, and she leaves behind a lasting legacy of love.
Family and friends are all welcome to pay their respects to Gene Nash beginning with a wake at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street, Marshfield on Friday, April 21, from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at St. Ann by the Sea Parish Church, 591 Ocean Street in Marshfield.
