Proud grandfather to Elizabeth and Emily Jager, David, Michael and wife Meadow, Benjamin and Quinn McCarron and great-grandsons Edward and Cole. He is also survived by cherished sister Ann-Marie Pytlinski of Colorado and husband Tony, beloved brothers-in-law Alexander MacLachlan and the late Elizabeth MacLachlan of Delaware, James MacLachlan of Pennsylvania and his wife Jane, dearly loved cousin Robert Sullivan of California and his wife Julie, and fellow veteran Andrew Pytlinski. Son of the late Louis Robert McCarron and Gertrude (Hennebury) McCarron of Quincy, Massachusetts, and devoted older brother to the late Janice Meyer of California and the late Kenneth McCarron of New Hampshire. George leaves behind many nieces, nephews and their families all of whom were a treasured part of his long life, as well as beloved friends at the Marshfield Rod & Gun Club, the Ventress Memorial Library, the South Shore Amateur Radio Network, and the loving and caring memory care community at Avita of Newburyport.
A graduate of North Quincy High School Class of 1950, George entered the Apprenticeship Program at Bethlehem Steel Company and rose to the position of Class A Draftsman in 1955, specializing in ship rigging and machinery layouts. A sports car enthusiast, he enjoyed an MG and an Austin Healey before being drafted into the US Army. He served two years as a Forward Observer in Field Artillery and Meteorologist and was stationed in Germany, where he purchased a Carmen Ghia and accumulated a trove of memories and photographs while touring Europe.
Upon his return to the US and his job at Bethlehem Steel, he met and married his beloved Kay in 1958 and purchased their forever home in Marshfield. His early career at Bethlehem Steel included assisting in the design of the DLG(N) nuclear frigates, designing antenna structures and drivetrains with Antenna Systems Inc., and time as an electro-mechanical design checker with The Sanborn Company and Honeywell Co.
At age 34, George joined the Northeastern University College of Professional Studies Evening Division, graduating in 1974 with a BS in Civil Engineering. A registered Professional Engineer since 1972, he worked with JJ Henry Co. Naval Architects, where he was a design and drafting supervisor, and ultimately joined the Boston engineering firms of Fay, Spofford and Thorndike and then Bryant Associates, where he was particularly proud of his work on the design of marine and industrial facilities, including as Project Engineer for the Norfolk and Essex County Jails, several Boston area courthouses, the Naval War College Library in Newport, RI, and US State Department facilities in Bangkok, Thailand. He particularly loved his role as Supervisor of design and construction for over 40 parks and playgrounds for the City of Boston Parks Department, as many of these parks were enjoyed by his granddaughters and their friends.
A devoted husband and father, George not only worked and commuted long hours for both his work and his education but was an involved father and community member. His children and grandchildren will always cherish cross-country camping adventures, boating trips for fishing and waterskiing, hands-on home improvement instruction, and his calm and solid example of hard work and devotion to family.
An Amateur Radio enthusiast for over 60 years, he volunteered his time preparing others for the FCC exams, was active in South Shore "HAM" networks, and was honored to be a Civil Defense Radio Officer in the Town of Marshfield, combining his love of Amateur Radio with civic duty.
As an active member of the Marshfield Rod & Gun Club since 1958 and a Board Member, George coordinated Military Matches, was a prominent member of the Rifle and Pistol Team, organized NRA Safety Training and Education Events for Women and helped steer Club expansion and innovation goals. The modernized indoor pistol range at the Club was dedicated in his honor. His children and grandchildren were all introduced to safe firearm practices at the Club. He was appointed an Honorary Sheriff of Plymouth County in recognition of his devotion and respect for firearm education and safety.
George was tireless in retirement; beginning in 1995 and completely self-taught, he built a sailing dinghy and a rowing dory. A lifelong train and rail transport system enthusiast, he painstakingly constructed an extensive HO Scale model railroad layout in his basement. He embraced woodworking and created rocking toys for all his grandchildren. He continued his home improvement projects including a two-story addition and new three-car garage, and he and Kay travelled the United States and Great Britain. An avid military historian, George loved to share his encyclopedic knowledge of war and warfare. Astronomy and star-gazing were a passion and he embraced opportunities to pass on his love of the constellations and the night sky. He became an avid photographer and videographer, with his grandchildren and nature being his favorite subjects.
George will always be remembered with love for his dry and often wicked sense of humor, his smile, a love of lobster rolls and food in general, his ever-present camera bag and multiple pairs of binoculars, his signature army tan outfit, bomber jacket, and green ball cap. His favorite gesture was a "thumbs up" and it symbolized how he lived his long life. His family and friends are so grateful and blessed to know that he and Kay were ours.
George and Kay will be together at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts. At George's request, memorial services will be private.
