Harold Bernard McShane passed away peacefully at South Shore Hospital on May 25, 2024, at 91 years old, surrounded by the family he devoted his life to: his wife of 67 years, Eileen (Gannon); his sons, Harold Jr. and David; his daughters-in-law, Michelle (Nulty) and Rosa (Fina); and his grandchildren, Julianne and David Jr.
Harold was born to the late Hugh Manus McShane and the late Ethel Josephine (Rogers) in 1932 in Waltham, Massachusetts, where he spent his childhood alongside his siblings, the late Hugh Jr., Barbara (Daly), the late Paul Francis, and Rosalyn (Hassell). Harold's strong work ethic formed when he was young, especially after the death of his father Hugh when he was a boy. He married his wife Eileen at St. Patrick's in Watertown in 1956; they began their family in Watertown and later lived in Newton.
Harold took great pride in his more than 40-year-long career working for the Department of Defense, where he rose to the position of Deputy Director of Contract Administration. He went on to work for Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) as a liaison for the Combined Federal Campaign and the United Way.
Harold was a devoted father to Harry and David and encouraged his sons in all their pursuits, coaching their sports teams and leading their Boy Scouts troops when they were young. When his sons married, Harold loved his daughters-in-law, Rosa and Michelle, like they were his own and formed special relationships with both.
Later in life, Harold and Eileen enjoyed many years on Cape Cod and in Naples, Florida, where they spent time golfing, visiting the beach, and laughing with friends and family, including his sisters-in-law, the late Rita Govostes (Gannon) and the late Mary Bradley (Gannon), who lived on the same street as them in Falmouth. As beloved "Papa" to Julianne and David Jr., Harold gave his grandchildren many childhood memories on the Cape, including playing in the waters of Bristol Beach in Falmouth and teaching them how to play card games and mini golf, along with many life lessons they will always cherish.
Harold was dedicated to his Catholic faith, which he credited with helping him overcome adversity throughout his life, including surviving various health issues. He was an avid follower of news, politics, and sports. Harold remained kind, loving, curious, and humble until the very end of his life, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
