Howard Richmond Hall, 89, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island on April 30, 1936, Howard was the son of Hope Richmond Hall and John E.C. Hall. From an early age, he showed a deep curiosity and drive to learn — qualities that shaped a lifetime of achievement, service, and kindness.
Howard attended St. George's School, Harvard College (A.B.) and Columbia University (M.A.), and he always loved to share stories about his year abroad at Repton School in Derbyshire, England.
His professional life began in sales at the Crompton-Richmond Company, a textile manufacturer to which his family had deep ties. After Crompton, he turned back to education and taught history [SM1] at St. George's School in Newport, Rhode Island from 1963-1974, where, as the Director of the Summer School, he founded the Summer Practice School of Oceanology. He proceeded to long careers in development and external relations at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Boston University School of Law and Joslin Diabetes Center. He traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and spent a significant amount of time in Washington, D.C. lobbying for legislation to support education and healthcare initiatives.
Howard was deeply committed to his community. He gave countless hours to Duxbury, always guided by a belief in making the world a little better for someone else. Whether serving on a committee, mentoring a student, or lending a hand quietly behind the scenes, Howard led by example. He served on the Duxbury School Committee from 1980-1986 and was a founding member of the Duxbury Education Foundation (DEF).
At the heart of everything was Howard's beloved wife, Judith Jordan Hall. Together they shared more than sixty-four wonderful years of marriage filled with laughter, shared purpose, and devotion. They loved to travel and cherished their time with family and friends.
Family meant everything to Howard, and nothing brought him greater joy than being "Pop Pop" and "Popper" to his many grandchildren. He took delight in their milestones, loved hearing their stories, and could always be counted on for patient advice, a gentle tease, or an extra scoop of ice cream.
When not working or volunteering, Howard could often be found sailing, caring for the many animals, or puttering in the yard —activities of peace and satisfaction. He took particular joy in caring for "The Tree," watching it change with the seasons and grow under his and Judy's careful hands. Animals always found a friend in Howard, who had a soft spot for any creature and never failed to make space for one more.
Those who knew Howard will remember his keen wit, warm heart, and genuine interest in people. He loved meeting people, hearing their stories, and helping in any way possible [SM2] — he had a remarkable ability to make others feel truly seen and valued — and, just as often, to make them laugh.
Howard leaves behind a legacy of love, humor, and quiet generosity — and a reminder that a good life is made up of the moments we share, the people we nurture, and the things we care for along the way.
He is survived by his wife Judith; his brothers David Binney Hall of Gleneden Beach, Oregon and Edwin King Hall of Duluth, Minnesota; his children Kristen Elizabeth Hall of South Burlington, Vermont, Jennifer Jordan Hall (Pat) of Louisville, Kentucky, Kathryn Morgan Hall of Portland, Maine, Shannon Richmond Moesaa (Henrik) of Duxbury, Massachusetts; his nine grandchildren Tyler, Brittany, Caleb, Danielle, Noah and Logan, and Isabella, RJ and Mathias; and many great-grandchildren. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers John Case Hall and Benjamin Case Hall.
