Hugh Scott Hamill died peacefully in his home on Sunday June 11th. He is survived by his loving wife Kristine Jelstrom-Hamill; two beautiful children, Hugh and Maeve; his mother, Jerilyn Hamill-Willbanks (Marshfield); and his siblings, Bryan Hamill (Hingham) and Kerrie Hamill-O'Neil (Marshfield).
Hugh was born in1968 and raised on Damon's Point in Marshfield. In late 2007, Hugh and Kristine returned to Marshfield to raise their children. Hugh began work at Geode Capital Management, LLC where he was instrumental in the growth of Geode's business, supporting new and existing products and mitigating operational risk. During his tenure as Head of Trade and ETF Operations, Geode's assets under management grew from $91 billion to approximately $1 trillion.
Outside of work, Hugh's drive and ambition showed itself in many ways. He was a runner turned cyclist who traded marathons for 150+ mile bike races. He could out climb most cyclists and always pushed for his personal best. He also was a life-long skier who was proud to have taught his kids as well as niece and nephews. He owned property in Brownsville, Vermont where he enjoyed vacations that included backcountry skiing, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, downhill skiing, and quality time with his extended family and friends. He coached his kids while they were young in recreational soccer, basketball, and baseball. Once they entered club and high school sports, he was a constant supporter from the sidelines. He also instilled in his children a deep appreciation for music that stemmed from his own childhood. From boomboxes to walkmans to cassettes to vinyls, Hugh and his brother Bryan developed a broad knowledge across all musical genres. While educating his kids on the classics, he always kept an ear open for new music including hip-hop, rap, electronic, reggae, jazz, post-metal and more. The Hamill house was always full of music and he was always willing to create a playlist for any event. A self-taught pianist and guitarist, his true passion was for the drums which he played in high school and at neighborhood jam sessions. A family man, Hugh was always willing to go on adventures with his wife and kids. Whether it was trips to the Spit on their family boat, vacations to National Parks or abroad to exotic locales. His witty sarcasm, his dedication to his family, and his determination were things he carried until the end and will be remembered for forever.
