Collins, Hugh D. "Red"
87 of Marshfield and Naples, FL (formerly of Readville, MA) passed away peacefully, on Monday, September 3, 2018 surrounded by his family. Hugh was born in Boston in 1931. He graduated from Hyde Park High class of 1950 where he was a three-sport athlete and captain of the cross-country, basketball and baseball teams. Hugh served in the US Navy and worked for the US Postal Service. He attended Bentley School of Accounting while pursuing a lifelong career in the stevedoring industry, becoming President of New England Shipping Agency. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Boston Shipping Association and Massachusetts Port Authority. A soft-spoken man of faith, he was a great listener with a quick wit and dry sense of humor. Hugh will be remembered for his wisdom, strength, perseverance, and caring nature. An avid golfer and sports fan, he never missed a Red Sox or Patriots game. Hugh was a member of the Quail Run Golf Club and Forest Lakes Community in Naples, FL., where he had many close friends.
Nothing was more important to Hugh than his family. Devoted husband to Lyla (O'Connell) Collins for 62 years. Loving father to Hugh F. (wife Kathleen) Collins of Hingham, the late Gregory James Collins, Robin (husband John) McCormack, of Scituate, and Lauren (husband William) Allen of Newport, RI. Adoring "Pa", to grandchildren Caitlin (husband Christopher) Bryson of Scituate, Brian (wife Carolyn) Collins of Hingham, Lila (husband Matthew) Davis of Scituate, and Taylor (husband George) Armstrong of Charlestown, and to great-grandchildren Ciara, Mack, Chase, Sean, Anna and Elise. Also survived by Thomas O'Connell, John Schaffner, Lorraine B. Collins and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Hugh is united in heaven with his son Gregory Collins, father Hugh F. Collins, uncles Alan and William Collins, brother James Collins, niece Lorraine E. Collins and sisters- in-law Mary O'Connell and Maureen Schaffner.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, September 7 at MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street Marshfield, MA. A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be at St. Ann By the Sea, 591 Ocean Street, Marshfield, MA on Saturday, September 8 at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Couch Cemetery.
