Obituary

Inez J. (Rose) Barrows of Duxbury passed away on March 29, 2022 at the age of 87. Beloved wife of the late James M. Barrows, she leaves her children James M. Barrows, Jr., of Roslindale, Joyce Cheatham of Brockton, and Kim Champion of Brockton, as well as her sister Virginia. She was the cherished grandmother of Candace Cheatham, Sheena (Cheathan) Goring, and Dominic Cheatham, and great-grandmother of Mya Salazar, Anabella Cheatham and Ethan Cheatham-Goring.

Born in 1934 to a father who was a longshoreman, and her mother who was a domestic worker, she was raised with three sisters and five brothers in Boston's South End neighborhood. Inez, known as Enie to family and friends, often mentioned how much she enjoyed growing up in the South End with people of so many races and ethnicities.  She would recount watching the construction of one of Boston's first skyscrapers, the original John Hancock building, from her classroom in the nearby Abraham Lincoln elementary school.

Married to James Manuel Barrows, Sr. in 1956, they lived in Roxbury until moving in 1963 to their newly built home in Duxbury. Although this home was modest, she made sure it was always filled with love and fun for their children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially during the holidays. Primarily a stay-at-home mother she worked part-time at several small local manufacturing businesses and later as a housekeeper for a few Duxbury families. She enjoyed reading novels, watching mystery films, Family Feud, Andy Griffin, and Wheel of Fortune, doing crossword and picture puzzles, and caring for her pet dogs and cats.

After her retirement, she spent many hours with her sister Katherine and other family members, while also enjoying social activities at the Duxbury Senior Center. The last two years of her life were spent in the loving care of her daughters and grandson.  Her warm smile, her genuine kindness, her great sense of humor, and a deep love for her family, friends, and everyone she met, is something that we will always cherish.

In lieu of flowers, feel free to make a donation to the Standish Humane Society, by mail to P.O. Box 634, Duxbury, MA 02331 or online at https://www.standishhumane.org/
