Obituary

James Richard (Dick to family and friends) Gustafson of Marshfield Hills passed into eternal life on January 25, 2022. Predeceased by his father, Harry N, Gustafson and his in-laws, Alev and Gladys Kokturk; he is survived by his mother, Joan Gustafson of Bridgewater, MA, his wife June, his sons Harry of Cambridge MA and Max of Chicago, IL. Dick is also survived by his brothers and sisters, George & Anna Gustafson of Berkeley, MA; Jeff & Lynn Gustafson of Hanson, MA; William and Nancy Gustafson of Mendon, MA and Cindy Lyons of Bridgewater, MA. He will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews and the many friends he made along the way, including Jean & James Milch and Andrew and Madeline Schau. Dick was predeceased by one of his closest friends, Angel Pagan.

Born at the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst NJ, he spent most of his childhood living in different areas around the mid-Atlantic coast and New England. He was a graduate of Bridgewater-Raynham High School and enlisted in the US Army shortly thereafter. Honorably discharged three years later, he enrolled in the University of Massachusetts Amherst, graduating with honors in BS in business administration with a concentration in accounting. Upon graduation, he began his career at Swiss Bank Corporation in New York, where he developed many lifelong friendships. It was during his time there that he went to a Halloween party hosted by Mike Ognibene and met his future wife.

After working at Shearson/Lehman Bros. and Drexel Burnham Lambert, he and June moved home to Massachusetts where they began their family. Dick, without any formal computer training, made the shift into information technology and worked in the role as a senior vice president at State Street Corporation, Atlantic Trust, Eagle Investments, and lastly Bank of New York/Mellon.

Dick loved his family, the beach, all the Boston sports teams, his friends, a passion for cooking, with his specialties, pasta carbonara and beef Stroganoff, the New York Times Crossword puzzle (which on a good day he could complete in under 30 minutes), reading, especially the great classic novels he skimmed through in high school and biographies. In his younger days, he was a bit of a thrill seeker: he skydived multiple times and loved cruising on his motorcycle, which he sold once his children were born, much to the disappointment of the children. He even once ran the bulls in Pamplona, an experience he once referred to as the "stupidest decision [he] ever made" and "totally awesome."

With a stoic and seemingly aloof exterior, Dick was one of the most genuine, intelligent, and witty people one could ever meet. He had a great sense of humor and a passion for music of all kinds from opera to grunge, with 1970s rock edging out as a favorite.

A celebration of his life is planned for the spring and in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to the Joslin Clinic in Boston, online at https://www.joslin.org/ or JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), online at https://www.jdrf.org/

June, Harry, and Max Gustafson would like to thank everyone for their incredible love and support during this difficult time.

Friends and family are invited to attend a service to celebrate Dick's life on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Parish Church, 24 River Street in Norwell.
