James J. Smith, of Marshfield, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017 after a long illness. James is survived by his longtime companion Isabell Fogwill. He was predeceased by his wife, Maureen Garrity Smith. He was the son of the late James Kerr Smith and Charlotte Campbell Smith of Weymouth. James is also survived by his children, Gary Smith of Duxbury, Sheryl Smith of Danvers, Kevin Smith of Boston, Steven Smith of Orlando, Florida, Lisa Smith Betro of Foxboro, Kim Smith of Norton, and Jean Smith of West Stockbridge, as well as 15 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, a sister, Charlotte Hanson of Hanover, and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was a 1957 graduate of Weymouth High School and attended Northeastern University. He was employed as a Ship Superintendent for the General Dynamics Electric Boat division, building submarines for the Navy. Jim later stared his own company designing and manufacturing products used to clean up oil spills, and traveled to many of the worst oils spills in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico. Jim was an avid gardener, and loved helping his children and friends cultivate their gardens. Jim loved cooking for his family and friends, and was locally famous for his clam chowder and lobster bakes. He was an avid sports fan, particularly football, following all the Boston teams. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street (Rte. 139) in Marshfield, followed by a Funeral Mass on Wednesday, April 19 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 40 Canal Street, Marshfield.
