McFarland, James F. "Captain Jim"/"Big Mac" of Marshfield passed away on December 20 at the age of 65. Beloved husband of Janice (Paul) McFarland. Loving father of Jenine McFarland of Marshfield, Johanna McFarland of Marshfield, Juliette McFarland of Marshfield and James F. McFarland Jr. of Weymouth. Loving grandfather of Elli and Maggie Rollins. Dear brother of Peter McFarland and his wife Dorothea, Patrick McFarland and his wife Doreen, Virginia Coughlin and her husband Brian all of Long Island, NY and the late Elizabeth McFarland and Kevin McFarland. Dear son of the late James F. and Jeanette L (Eslinger) McFarland. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Jim was born in New York City and raised in Floral Park, Long Island. He graduated from Sewanhaka High School, class of 1967. Jim attended Assumption College in Worcester but left after 2 years to serve his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He then went on to work in textile sales with his grandfather and father for Valdese Weavers and later for Kandall Fabrics as an independent sales rep. for New England and Canada bringing him back to Massachusetts.
After he married he pursued his dream of fishing and obtained his Charter Boat Captains License, running trips on the "ODD COUPLE". He took many charters for his specialty, cod fish, out of Green Harbor Marina. In 1986 he purchased his cherished "BIG MAC", a 35ft. down-easter and started BIG MAC FISHING ENT, adding commercial fishing to his forte. He lobstered and long lined for cod and haddock year round in the waters of Cape Cod Bay for many years until fishing regulations made it near impossible.
Jim enjoyed sports, especially football and never lost his love for the NY Jets. It was always a difficult time in the McFarland house when the Patriots played the Jets. He also loved going to his son's football games when he played for MHS and Mass. Maritime. But most of all he enjoyed his time with his son on the boat when he would mate for a charter or just out to catch the elusive blue fin tuna.
Jim will be sorely missed by all his long time, faithful customers as well as his friends on Pier 4 and many others. Jim had a great sense of humor, always playing practical jokes, and will be sadly missed by his girls Jenine, Jo and Julie and grandchildren Elli and Maggie whom he loved very much.
