Obituary

James "Sonny" Patrick Murphy passed peacefully on July 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 1, 1930, in Greenane, Bere Island, County Cork, Ireland, the beloved son of Margaret (O'Neill) and James Murphy.

Jim graduated from Presentation Brothers College in Cork, and emigrated to America in 1949, where he later met the love of his life, Helen. The two built a beautiful life together, raising their family in Somerville and later Marshfield. A proud veteran, Jim served in the U.S. Army and went on to become a Master Electrician, a trade he pursued with great dedication and skill.

His Irish heritage always remained at the core of who he was. Though he spent most of his life in Massachusetts, his heart always remained on Bere Island. After retirement, he shared his love of Irish culture by teaching Irish language and participating in the Boston Beara Society and the Scituate Sister City Project with West Cork. He was a diehard Bruins fan, never missing a game, and a loyal supporter of Cork's hurling team. Jim was a man who touched the hearts of all who knew him—with his wit, warmth, humility, and deep devotion to his family.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen (Belton) Murphy, his son David Murphy, and his siblings Maureen Irish, Jerome Murphy, Ann (Phil) Murphy, Margaret Doyle, Sheila Murphy, Catherine (Kathleen) O'Hara, and Donald Murphy.

He is survived by his loving children, Eileen Bossa and her husband Wayne of Norwell; Jim Murphy and his wife Sue of Westwood; Sheila Murphy of Marshfield; and Judy Stone of Colorado. Proud and cherished Papa of Catie Davis and her husband Joe of Weymouth; Annie Bossa and her husband Donal of Ennis, Ireland; Mary Elizabeth Stone-Murphy and her husband Walter of West Virginia; Declan Stone-Murphy of Boston; Mark and Brian Lane of Westwood; and Brendan Murphy of Westwood. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Jim's legacy is one of love, laughter, and fierce loyalty to his roots and family. He will be missed beyond words.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, August 1, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street, Marshfield. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Ann by the Sea, 587 Ocean Street, Marshfield. Interment will be held at a later date.
