Joan A. (Ebbeling) MacArthur, age 84 of Marshfield died peacefully, Tuesday July 2, 2024, at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Grafton, MA and raised and educated in Northbridge, she graduated from Northbridge High School in 1957. She earned her R.N. degree from N.E. Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1960. Joan served as Head Nurse at Deaconess for a number of years then worked at Lahey Clinic on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. After marriage, she worked at the Jimmy Fund Blood Bank. In quiet times she completed insurance exams as a mobile nurse throughout the South Shore.
She raised her two sons in Marshfield as a loving mother and what often seemed like an MMA referee between the spirited boys. She was a fixture around town in her recognizable orange Volvo logging thousands of miles as a hockey mom, as well as soccer, lacrosse, and football. Her love and support for her boys was immeasurable. She enjoyed social and team tennis and even moonlighted as an aerobics instructor for a time. Joan was a long-time member of her bridge group and enjoyed coffee outings, weekly lunches with the "girls" and dinners with a strong, caring network of friends.
She had a sweet kindness to all creatures and was a dog mom to Sparky, a Miniature Schnauzer, for 12 years and later with Cody, their beloved German Shepherd, constantly at her side. She could always be seen in the neighborhood walking the dogs and spreading her infectious smile and goodwill. At times, she would jokingly threaten her husband that he could be easily replaced with another furry companion. In retirement, Joan played golf locally and in Naples, FL. As an avid reader, she loved spending time on the beach with a good book at the Charter Club on Marco Island, FL where the family enjoyed time over the expanse of forty years.
Anyone that was blessed to have known Joan will remember her as a giver with a strong heart. She was there for anyone and was selfless to family, friends, and strangers alike. Joan is survived by her loving husband of 55 years James, son Ian of Boston, son Alec of Marshfield, daughter-in-law Kendra of Marshfield and twin grandchildren, Angus and Maeve also of Marshfield. Joan is also survived by brother Sidney and his family.
