Obituary

Maddy, Joan Pauline (Gherardi), of Pembroke December 30, 2020. Beloved wife of the late Donald F. Maddy Jr., loving mother of Dawn Fraser of Gill, Mark Maddy of Champlain, NY, Diane Maddy of Rockland, Kurt Maddy of Weymouth, Scott (Deborah) Maddy of Hilton Head, SC., Craig Maddy of Lakeville, and Keith Maddy of Boston. Grandmother of Cory Maddy, Charlotte Bodell, Matt, Jeremiah, Sindy and Robert Maddy, Heather Maddy and Richard Briggs, Justin, Kyle, and Amber Maddy and Tayla and Paige Maddy, Polly also leaves 13 cherished great-grandchildren. Inseparable sister of the late Viola L. (J. Robert "Bob") MacDonald.  She was the beloved Aunt to many nieces and nephews, and will be dearly missed by her extended, close-knit, Pomarico family members and cherished friends.

Joan was born in Quincy to the late Peter and Clara (Pomarico) Gherardi and a 1952 graduate of Quincy High School.  A beautiful, petite and fun loving woman, she loved to dance, which is how she met the love of her life, Donnie.

Joan, also fondly known as Polly or Aunt Polly by many, worked for many, many years as a committed and diligent housekeeper at Howard Johnson's in Kingston and was loved by many, co-workers and guests alike.  Though small in stature – her high school yearbook lists her Ambition: To become 5' tall, she was larger than life and overflowed with unconditional love, compassion and forgiveness to her children, their families, friends and acquaintances.  As quoted in her yearbook, "A true friend is a forever friend."

Polly and her sister Viola were inseparable.  They were a dynamic duo that shared a profound bond of sisterly love for 85 years, enjoying weekly tea w/aunts, cousins and daily conversations until Viola's passing last year.  Polly also shared a special bond with her best friend of 40+ years, Ellie Craven, who also passed last year.

Due to restrictions of COVID 19, visitation and Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Marshfield will be private. Interment will be in the Winslow Cemetery Marshfield where Polly will be place beside her husband and close to her lifelong friend and sister Viola.
