Joan Ellen Scollins, 92, died peacefully at the Southwood Memory Care Unit in Norwell on Wednesday, April 19th.
Joan was the eldest child of William Randolph Scollins of Boston and Kathleen Hill Scollins of Essex County, England. Joan was a student of Hickox Secretarial School in Boston where she learned typing and shorthand, then secured a job at Boston University to pay for her college education. She was a motivated student and mentor who loved learning and teaching. She graduated from Boston Notre Dame Academy and received a B.A. from Emmanuel College, an M.A. from Boston University and her J.D. from New England Law School. She was a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame De Namur for 17 years and taught English, Latin and Religion at Notre Dame Academy in Worcester and North Dartmouth Bishop Stang High School. She was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the Notre Dame Educational Council. She was elected by 21 high schools to serve as advisor to teachers of English and to help set educational policy for those schools.
Joan left the sisterhood to pursue a career working for the U.S. Government in Social Security Administration in Arlington Virginia, Westminster and Gardner MA. She loved helping hard working people receive the best of their well-earned retirement benefits to enjoy their retirement years. Joan retired in Osterville MA, a community she dearly loved after 27 years of service. She then worked part time at the local grocery store and library to remain active in the community. Joan loved vacationing in Florida. dining at her favorite Cape Cod restaurants, Whimpy's, The Old Yarmouth Inn, The Daniel Webster Inn and Baxters, ice cream at the Four Seas and reading books at Dowses Beach in Osterville.
She was the sister of the late William "Bud" Randolph Scollins Jr. and his wife Carole Settana Scollins, the late Donald Hill Scollins and his wife Margaret Creed Scollins, the late Carole Scollins Creed and her deceased husband William Carey Creed and Dennis Scollins and his wife Debra Wiggins Scollins and beloved Aunt of 17 nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, April 28 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:30 at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Church, 40 Canal Street in Marshfield.
