John L. (Jack) Butler, 89, of Cohasset passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Born in Brockton on August 23, 1934, he was the beloved son of the late John and Katherine Butler. In addition, he was brother to his sister Terese Balsavich, whom he loved very much.
Jack grew up in Brockton where he helped his father, John Senior, at his neighborhood convenience store where he got to read the latest comics and listen to the Boston Red Sox on the radio. But his real interests or passions were why and how things worked, specifically radios and electronics, thus after graduating from Brockton High he enrolled in Northeastern University physics program in 1952 where he could learn the why and how things worked. One of his Co-op student jobs while at Northeastern University was working for The Kelton Company in Boston, a manufacturer of Hi-Fi equipment. This is where he we first introduced to Hi-Fi loudspeakers and acoustical systems, which would shape his professional and personal career. After graduating from Northeastern University in 1957, he entered the Brown University graduate program in physics where he studied the science of acoustics and ultrasonics. After graduating in 1961, he worked for various companies that were associated with air and underwater acoustic products, but mostly related to the field of SONAR devices that transmitted and received acoustic energy. During this time, he completed a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in 1967. In the early 1970's his hobby at home was the design, building and testing of home stereo loudspeaker systems, which grew to the point that he was selling these systems to stereo Hi-Fi stores in the Boston area. All the children were involved at one point or another with testing or building of these systems. At this time, he decided that he would be a consultant in acoustics and sonar systems for the US Navy and the companies that he had worked for, he chose to name the new company Image Acoustics Inc., which included both his consulting and loudspeaker systems businesses in 1974. Since he had a home office for consulting and the basement for manufacturing loudspeaker systems, the whole family participated in some manner. Jack, known for his expertise in the field would later co-author a book titled "Transducers and Arrays for Underwater Sound," 1st Ed 2007 and 2nd Ed 2016. Jack's achievements, talents and knowledge are those of greatness. It was his mild temperament, kindness and love for his wife and children that made Jack such a memorable person.
Family members include his loving wife of 66 years, Nancy J. (Clark) Butler; his sons Greg Butler of Plymouth, Stephen Butler and his wife, Sibelly of Portsmouth, RI, the late Alex Butler; his daughters, Liz Davis and her husband Greg Davis, of Marshfield, Tori Curtis and her husband Matt Curtis of Milton; and 10 grandchildren, Ashley, Jake, Mitch, Tyler, Logan, Devlin, Amber, Teague, Lola and Matthew; and great-granddaughter Georgia.
