John R. Coombs, of Marshfield, passed away on December 18, 2017 at the age of 88. Beloved husband of Patricia (Johnson) Coombs and loving father of John R. Coombs, Jr. and Christopher J. Coombs, both of Marshfield, Ann-Marie Messbauer and her husband James of Springfield, and Jennifer Fransen and her husband Andrew of Upton. John was cherished grandfather to 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He leaves a brother, Richard Coombs of New Jersey, and many nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by siblings Frannie, Peg, Barbara, and Lawrence.
John was raised in East Boston and graduated from East Boston High School. He played semi-pro football, and was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army. Later he became a Tool and Die Maker, retiring from the Gillette Company in the late 1990's. Known from his childhood radio performance as "The Singing Cowboy from East Boston", John also sang as an adult in several church shows and in a barbershop quartet. He was a member of St. Christine's Church and sang in the choir for years. John's other hobbies included gardening, woodworking, classical music, banjo playing, and anything electronic. He was also an extra-class Ham Radio Operator – WQ1L.
Services for John will be private, but anyone wishing to do so may make a donation in his memory to the charity of their choice.
