John Francis Darden, 80, passed away on November 2, 2026, in Hingham, Massachusetts. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, John served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He went on to a successful career in the insurance industry, rising to Chief Financial Officer, and was an outstanding athlete. Above all, he was devoted to his family. In his later years, he treasured time with his five grandchildren, who knew him affectionately as "Papa Roo."
Throughout his life he was an enthusiastic sports fan, rooting for his beloved New York Giants, New York Yankees, and Duke Blue Devils. He was known as an intensely competitive man, with a unique ability to creatively find a way to win in anything he confronted. Most importantly, John brought his infectious smile, laughter, and joy into every room he entered. He was relentlessly happy and always made it clear to friends and family that he was in their corner, providing supportive advice and love whenever it was needed. Quite simply, John Francis Darden was the person you always wanted on your team.
Mr. Darden is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peggy Darden, their three children - Lorraine (Proukou) and her husband Theo; Diane (Kelly) and her husband Patrick; John Michael Darden and his wife Briar; and five grandchildren, Tyler and Mackenzie (Proukou), Devin, Johnny and Henry Darden.
