Husband, Dad, Pops, Johnnie, Beloved Husband of Geneva (Cotreau) DeJesus for 68 years, a Dad to Ann (Jeff) Davison of Bedford, NH., John (Kerri) DeJesus of Marblehead, MA and Jupiter, FL. Debbie DeJesus (Catherine Lyons) of Hanover and the late Paul DeJesus. Pops to Heather, Elizabeth, Meredith, Kate, Kara, Corey, Jack, Jessica, Patrick and Jax. Great grand Pops to Maeve, Lucy, Faith, Clare, William and Welles. Father-in-law of Beth DeJesus of RI. John was the son of the late Manual and Mary (Vieira) DeJesus. Brother of the late Alice DeJesus, Mary Rogers and Dorothy Bandarra.
As a young man, at 18 years of age, John enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country with honor and pride in the Pacific Theatre of Operations in WWII on board USS LST-660. John endured six beach assaults in Palau, the Philippines and at Okinawa Island. One of his proudest moments was witnessing the American flag raising at Iwo Jima. He was awarded the following Campaign Ribbons: American Campaign, four stars for the Asiatic Pacific, Victory, Philippine Occupation, National Defense, and one-star Philippine Liberation.
Upon returning to the states John attended Northeastern University to pursue an engineering degree and worked part time as a meat cutter at First National, a local supermarket where he realized that business was his true calling. In 1947, John opened a corner grocery food store called Johnnie's in his East Cambridge neighborhood launching his business career. In 1955, he moved Johnnie's to Ball Square in Somerville. In 1962, John opened his second store on Beacon Street and formally incorporated it as Johnnie's Foodmaster. Over a span of almost 50 years Johnnie's Foodmaster would expand to 13 stores, employing over 1500 people, and serving thousands in the Boston area.
Visiting hours will be held in the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean St., Rte. 139 Marshfield on Friday Oct 19, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral from the funeral home on Saturday, Oct 20, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St Christine's Church 1295 Main St Marshfield at 11:00 am. Interment will in the Couch Cemetery on Union St. in Marshfield. Contributions in John's memory may be made to Cardiac Care at South Shore Hospital, and mailed to South Shore Health Foundation, 55 Fogg Rd., S. Weymouth, MA 02190.
