John Joseph Downey left this world early Thursday morning, February 16, 2023, after a long, productive life. Beloved husband of the late Jeanne T. (Donoghue) Downey, he was the loving father of Kathleen McCauley of Roslindale, Elizabeth "Beth" Downey of New Harbor, ME, Sharon Hasrouni and her husband Nabil of Roslindale and Jeanne-Marie Van Hemmen and her husband Pim of New Harbor, ME; and cherished grandfather of Kathleen "Maddie" McCauley, Fianna Fluess, Helena Van Hemmen, Kees Van Hemmen, and the late Hansa Sabina Van Hemmen.
Jack, as he was known to his friends, was a graduate of Roslindale High School where he was a valued member of the football team. At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve during World War II. As a soldier he spent time in the boxing ring and was a member of the Military Police. While stationed in Japan, he very much enjoyed traveling the country during his free time.
After serving he returned home and married the love of his life, Jeanne Donoghue Downey, whom he stayed married to for life. He then joined the Boston Police Department, following in the footsteps of his uncle and grandfather. While working full time as a police officer, Jack earned a Bachelor Degree from Boston State College.
Jack loved his 40-year long career as a Boston Police Officer. Some of his favorite memories came from his time spent in the Boston City Hospital emergency room where he was the officer on duty, keeping the staff and patients safe while entertaining them with his famous dry wit. He relished his leadership role as Lieutenant Detective, often praising the detectives in his department whom he said could solve any case. He proudly retired at the age of 65.
Jack helped a lot of people and made many friends over his lifetime. He was always ready to do a favor for a friend, whether it was giving free legal advice or getting good seats at a Red Sox game.
Jack's work friends remained a large part of his life after retirement. He spent fun times golfing and socializing in Florida during the winter and boating and fishing in Green Harbor in the summer. Jack passed away at the impressive age of 94 in his cozy cottage in Green Harbor surrounded by loving family and generous neighbors and his beloved wife's paintings on every wall.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack's memory can be made to the Marshfield Senior Center, by mail to 230 Webster Street, Marshfield MA 02050.
