John J. Farrell, 75, of Marshfield, MA died peacefully on August 6th after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Known as "Jack", he was the son of William "Penny" and Gertrude Farrell of Boston and brother to Bill and his wife Peggy of Milford and Sandra and her husband Bill of Norwood. No doubt, he was greeted with open arms by his sister Linda and their parents.
Jack will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 52 years whom he called his angel, Anne, and their sons; John and his former wife Kara, Mark and his wife Kathy, and Brian and his wife Jessica. Jack was endlessly proud of his seven grandchildren; Brian, Kayla, Haley, T.J., Neela, Jack and Anna.
Jack had many gifts, not the least of which was his positive mindset. He was grateful for simple pleasures like appreciating the ocean, enjoying music in the kitchen, spending time on the beach and at the golf course or cheering the many endeavors of his grandchildren. Jack was an example of hard work and dedication. While attending St. Mary's High School, he became the first ever athlete to make all 3 All Catholic teams in football, basketball, and baseball. Throughout his life, he maintained this dedication to fitness and well-being. He had an appetite for reading, learning, and sharing wisdom. He loved to collect words and phrases that resonated with the joy he already held in his heart. Although he retired from teaching and coaching after a celebrated career of more than 30 years with Boston Public Schools, mentoring was in Jack's nature. It made him happy to share his knowledge of sports, history, and how to live a grateful life.
Those who were fortunate enough to be cared for by Jack will carry the memory of his deep, lyrical laugh in their hearts as we strive to live the kind of simple and blessed life that he wished for each of us. We take the greatest comfort from our cherished memories of him and from the stories that people share with us about the strength and support they received from Jack and the impact and influence that he had on their lives.
We will honor Jack on Wednesday August 11, 2021 from 4:00-6:00 PM with visiting hours and a 6:00 PM service at MacDonald Funeral Home on Ocean St. in Marshfield. In Lieu of flowers, if you are so moved, we ask that you make a donation to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to support cancer research and patient care, online at
