John William Gainey of Scituate, MA passed away peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2024, at the age of 82. Formerly of Hingham, MA, Dennis, MA and Bonita Springs, FL. John was born on May 30, 1941 in Boston, MA, son of the late John and Marguerite (Cuff) Gainey. He was raised in Jamaica Plain and Roslindale, MA with his siblings, Lorraine (LaPlume) and the late Mary Lou (Izzo) and James Gainey.
After graduating from Roslindale High School, John joined the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after serving his 4-year commitment. He was awarded both the Good Conduct Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He later earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business at Boston College night school while working days as a Union Iron Worker. He was recently named a Lifetime Member of Local 7. After graduating from Boston College he decided hanging from I-Beams wasn't the long-term solution, so he put his degree to immediate use and was hired by the Gillette Company, where he spent many years until retirement.
John married his first wife, the late Marguerite "Maggie" (Toland) in 1967. They had two sons, John and Matthew. John later married his 2nd wife, the late Janet (Holland,) in 1990 and gained another son, Michael. Both Maggie and Janet were taken from us much too early.
An avid golfer, his many rounds in retirement earned him a low handicap. The best years of his life were in retirement when he and Janet enjoyed traveling and golfing all over the world, and most fondly remembered playing at St. Andrews in Scotland. When not traveling they made their home following the sun between the Cape and Bonita Springs, FL. He loved to read, enjoyed growing flowers, biking and swimming in the ocean.
John is survived by his sister Lorraine and his sons, John and his wife Dawn Marie of Scituate, MA, Matt and his wife Stacey of Plymouth, MA, and his stepson Michael and his wife Lindsay of Bozeman, MT. Also survived by his three grandsons, Quinn, Luca, and Mason, who he loved eating KitKats and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups with.
He will be laid to rest in a ceremony at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA on Wednesday, February 14th at 12:45PM.
